Thai cave rescue - One of the divers has died

Gotta admit I didn't click on the article before writing that comment and assumed it was an experienced cave diver. Then again I don't think any diver would be comfortable with having used half their air getting there, even on a regular dive you plan to have some left in reserve let alone diving in a cave (I've never done a cave dive myself, I've dived in some wrecks and that's enough in terms of enclosed spaces for me but I think even if I were to attempt an easy/short cave dive in say a massive cave I'd want plenty in reserve). I guess if they're under a lot of pressure and they're not all cave divers then mistakes can sadly happen.
Yeah, although he was a navy diver, he wasn’t necessarily an experienced cave diver.

You’re right about wanting plenty of air in reserve. I did put ‘half’ in asterisks, as in theory, the same scenario could play out with ⅔ or even ¾ air.

The other thing is, he was returning after completing the delivery mission, so he would be fatigued by then, it was 2am local time when he got into difficulties so probably tired anyway. Even experienced professionals can make mistakes under those conditions, and in these circumstances, mistakes can lead to fatalities.

Now imagine that again but in almost or total darkness - with little to no cave diving experience.
And you’re 11, and you’ve been down there for two weeks already…

The vis in that video is incredible and definitely not representative of most good diving, never mind a silty cave situation.

I wonder what happens if they try diving them out and the first one is really touch and go, or god forbid something bad happens- surely they will have to abandon thoughts of carrying on with that plan?

Would you want your kid to be next if the first one doesn't make it?

Nobody has mentioned the teacher at all on the news; however I suspect he could be faring the worst, mentally. He is, I suppose, going to be held responsible for them being trapped, he is indirectly responsible for the navy guy’s death and will be acutely aware of how bleak their situation is. Perhaps they haven’t told the group about the diver’s death (I wouldn’t), but he’ll still instinctively know their chances are slim. Awful position to be in.

There isn't a best solution to this, it's a crap crap situation.

3. Dig down to them?
Too far and risk danger of collapse.

This isn't Thunderbirds, drilling through 1 mile of mountain right on top of the small cave they are hiding inside sounds batcrap insane.

people can drill that far and even further.the difference is if they can do it without any danger to the already almost impossibly bad situation.

Go in nearby for an easier route out but not right on top of them - the problem is getting the kind of equipment to do that onto that terrain.

A number of holes have been drilled, the deepest 400m to date according to the BBC.

I hope they all get out safely. Shame about the diver :(

Ah yeah - its still ~200m short of connecting to the caves there and still some distance through the caves to where they are but a lot better prospect if they can break through.

That’s promising. I suppose if they connect on the right side of the treacherous dive part they’ll be buzzing.

This apparently gives some idea what parts of the cave are like:

Horrific.

Horrible. Not my cup of tea either to be honest.

Many years ago I was supposed to do some potholing. I was on an "adventure training" fortnight down in Devon. We did loads of stuff, mainly on the moors, but for some reason someone messed-up the scheduling and a couple of groups, mine included, missed out on the potholing. I can't say I was too disappointed. :D

Not a chance they will be diving out if it’s anything close to that. Imagine that in murky water with zero visibility.

I’m not sure what to think, some Belgian journo reports from the cave were saying that the first 2 boys were to be taken out in the next 24hrs as the 11 hour round trip had reduced to 6 hours due to lower water levels from pumping. That’s not happening now for whatever reason.

I hope it’s not like dive that for any distance. That is just awful. This incident has gripped me more than most things do, just because of the sheer terror surrounding their situation. I probably would have tried swimming out on day 2 and got myself killed.

This is just going to end horribly isn't it. I can't think of a more nightmarish scenario. I think they'll be a huge loss of life if they try diving them out. The panic will just be to much I think and would only be worse when the almost eventual deaths occur. If it was me I'd probably rather they pass me a gun than an air tank.

Maybe they can try getting the strongest swimmers and most physically able out first. Will slow the rate of oxygen depletion in the cave and buy them some extra time I suppose. Will give them an indication of how plausabe it is for the others.

I won't bother asking how you think "Brexit" will go ;) Please don't take up hospital visiting.....
