IVF, NHS & Kids waiting for adoption.

You could say that about any number of treatments... and indeed you could probably increase the NHS budget dramatically by including loads of things that individually only take up a small portion of it. It doesn't seem like a very sound argument.

The biggest spend is on treating complications of diabetes caused by idiots unwilling to change thier lifestyle

yup and then we've got all the smokers and alcoholics etc...

in some ways it would perhaps be better if there were some sort of insurance based system whereby premiums could be adjusted to reflect some lifestyle choices like smoking, obesity etc..

Pretty retarded statement.

Ivf is a triumph of evolution, our intelligence has improved our ability to breed.

Yeah it's a real triumph when 68% of humans have an IQ between 85 and 115 and only 2% are above 130, it's great evolution when you see that 98% of humans are literally ******* morons

As for our intelligence ? You mean the intelligence of a select few have improved the majorities ability to spread like a virus :)

Whilst i applaud adoption, if the government tried to tell me i couldn't get assistance i pay for as a mandatory tax because some junked up drug addict spawned too many children and had them taken away, now the only option is to take and raise somone elses child that has none of my blood or DNA..

Nope, IVF should be paid for 100% of the time, adoption should be encouraged aswell.

Oh dear you're aware iq tests goal posts are constantly changed to keep the range like that right?

And 100 is points is enough to outsmart every creature on earth and alow humans to survive in pretty much any environment.

The world isn't built by a tiny % of geniuses.

But since you say everyone below 130 iq is a moron is this where you tell us you took an online test and are definitely in the 2% of non morons?

Smokers are a profit for the nhs.

If you want to be "fair" smokers should be fast tracked and given higher standards of care :p

What's the yearly total cost to the NHS for IVF treatment as a % of total spend? I wouldn't be surprised if its a fraction of a percent, in which case it seems trivial to worry about

- GP

Edit - Quick Google figures show it cost the NHS 400M/year out of their 122B budget... so 0.0032%. Really not worth worry about if financial is the driver

Jut reading through this topic from start to finish but your math's is way off here if those figures are correct. When did 0.4/122 become 0.0032%? Its actually 0.33% if you round it up and convert it from a decimal to a percentage.

A third of a percent for one specific type of fertility treatment seems to be pretty significant in my eyes. Factor in that a fair amount of these individuals could have conceived naturally if they didn't leave it so late in the day and it just looks even worse.

The animals raising other animals angle is flawed in comparison due to the fact that humans have the longest duty of care for our offspring. The next closest are elephant and orangutans, but their 2-3 years until children are independent pales massively to ours.

Me and my wife have been going through the adoption process since January, with Panel at the end of the month. The process takes about 6 months and is full of paperwork writing about your life from start to present. We had to do lots of interviews so our social worker can build a picture of us, even the dog got an assessment. The home has had a health and safety check, both cars had to confirmed road worthy. We have attended 5 training courses on different parenting methods and how to be a parent. We have also had to do volunteer work to build experience.

We decided not to do ivf as 1 month after our consultant told us the lovely news it got cut to 1 try. I didn't want to put my wife through it and neither did she. It's a shame that my county cut it to 1 to cut costs even with how cheap it is. The best thing is the decision for the cut was done behind close doors with no public debate.

The adoption process so far has been a interesting journey. We have met wonderful people and. Have built a nice little support group.

Good luck @matthab. We loved our adoption journey and still regularly meet up with people from our courses. We had a BBQ just last week and it's great seeing all the kids grow up together :)

I suppose that attitude could be applied to anything though.

I used to box and had my nose busted up. Had to have surgery to fix it.

Really why am I doing contact sports? no real need. But I see your point...... if someone is diabetic and not taking care of their health they are an idiot.

Well no, because the diabetes costs make cancer looks cheap.

Every sports injury in the country wouldn t even make a dent compared to diabetes complications and this isn't an accident like your sports injury they know it's going to happen they're told repeatedly given plans to avoid it but still do it.

Can't find stats for the UK but if we assume it's fairly consistent Belgium's stats put sports I juries at a cost of 0.07%-0.08% of thier medical spend

Diabetes here is about 10% of the nhs budget

Looking how many parents expect other people/organisations to do the actual parenting... that's why!!

We're social animals raising children has pretty much always been a group activity.

If you raise kids isolated in thier families they tend to be weird broken people.

Then again look at the world we live in has there ever been a more complicated time to be a child?

Our kids are born into a very strange situation where they're facing challenges and issues adults struggle with let alone an undeveloped child.
