What film did you watch last night?

Calibre 7/10 On Netflix

Really enjoyed this and it was a good addition to the genre.

If anyone has any recommendations for similar films I may have missed I'd be grateful

How it ends 4/10 Netflix

This was bad and looked like a tv movie

Not exactly what I was referring to though was it? :p
You can certainly judge a film from the first 10-15 mins.

Why must you watch a film to the end to make any kind of judgement against it?

If the first 10 mins of a film is non-stop fart jokes, for example, I can probably tell it's not a serious movie dealing with complex subject matter.

The first 10-15 mins of MI:4 told me everything I needed to know. It was awful in so many ways/ on so many levels.

Fargo - 8/10.

Good film, but as I watched the TV series (1-3) before the film, I actually prefer the TV series as there's more time to build up the characters.

Hotel Artemis (2018) - 6/10

A stylish action thriller with a good cast of characters and brutal fight scenes.

The setting is ok, but the story struggles to find its footing and is quite predictable, although it does have some witty moments.

Go watch Audition for 15mins and come here and write your feelings on it.

Then go back and finish it and then write your feedback again.

Please...

What would that prove, except that there are infrequent exceptions to any rule.

Your average summer blockbuster starts how it means to go on. After I'd decided I could take no more, I did look at a couple reviews for MI:4, and was happy to conclude that my initial feelings for it would not have improved should I somehow find the fortitude to inflict more pain on myself, by watching it to the end.

I'm not going to, of course. It was the kind of drivel that is proud of being drivel, and probably caters to its audience well.

My opinion is fine; I don't need to see any more.

It proves you are wrong and you wouldn’t know unless you watch it all.

How do you know unless you finish it? You say you can tell but how can you tell without watch it?

Yes, some movies can be like that but to put a sweeping brush on all films you are wrong and missing out.

If you want to prove me wrong then go watch Audition for 15 mins then the rest and come back.

Imagine if you had only watched the first 15mins of Lord it the Rings trilogy or just the first 15 mins of the Godfather.

If the first 10-15 mins of any film is completely retarded, then it doesn't deserve to be finished.

Perhaps MI:4 turned into the most compelling, thoughtful and mind-blowing film of all time.

Probability suggests it didn't.

Have you watched any of it, btw? Have you seen any of MI:4? The first 10-15 mins is some of the most cringe-worthy pap I've seen. No way in hell am I going back for a second helping of that.

Feel free to dismiss my opinion based on the fact that I couldn't put myself through all of it. Perhaps you'd like to share your counter-opinion about why MI:4 is worth anybody's time?

Or are you just arguing for arguing's sake? Wouldn't surprise me.

I have seen MI:4 and 5, I’ve seen all of them and 4 is good, I know because I actually finished it!

You seem to have overlooked the possibility that "a good film" is a matter of personal taste and interpretation.

I can tell you with all certainty that I would not have concluded MI:4 was "a good film", in the same way that hammering nails into your arm does not become more enjoyable the more nails you have.

Shall we leave it there? I'm sorry I didn't like the film you liked.

I have no problem of you or your opinion of a film that you’ve seen.

I just think your opinion is worthless for a film that you didn’t see.

Oh sorry, 15mins.

All you have got is an "impression" of a movie that isn't for you. That's all you got, but you can't categorically say it is a bad movie from 15 mins of a 2 hour movie.

And impression, that's all you have. It's an important distinction.

You see the thing is, I have no interest in watching awful movies all the way to the end.

If it's so bad that it makes me switch over after 15 mins, then I can't see that forcing myself to endure the rest of it makes any sense whatsoever.

Are you telling me you always watch every film to the end, even those that you intensely dislike after watching for a little while? In the vain hope that you might starting enjoying it, or that it might turn into a different film?

How often does that work out for you?

With the news of Glass coming out:

Unbreakable - 6.5/10 today, maybe 8/10 when it was released. Chose to watch this again as I couldn't remember how the Dunn/Price roles played out with each other past revelation. SPOILER: The only thing I forgot was that there was nothing past that point!
The subtleties of the movie were well placed in 2000. There's been too many perspectives on superhero movies to make this one stand out amongst the crowd these days.

Split - 7.5/10 I had never heard of this movie until the announcement of Glass, no idea how it flew under the radar. McAvoy was amazing, maybe one of his best, but they could have written it a little better. A bit more character depth in Wendell rather than the girl would have upped the score considerably. Being claustrophobic in it's setting was great for the McAvoy personality disorder reveal to the girls, but that lost a lot of potential in showing how he interfaced with the rest of the world. I also didn't get the significance of the place he'd been holed up in other than the development of p24. That reveal didn't need the grandstanding it got. Great ending scene tho.

I am not forcing you to watch movies you are not enjoying to the end.

But if you don't finish it, you forfeit the right to give it judgement, or at least, you opinion holds no water.

I mean would you trust any film critic who doesn't finish the movie? Would you trust a food critic when he only ate the starter and not the main? Can you judge a country because you only been to the airport?

Finish the movie, then I will then entertain your opinion on a movie, any movie.

Don't finish it, you shouldn't and can't judge it's entirety.

The MOST you can say is you turned it off and it wasn't for you. Your verdict shouldn't be on the entire film, your verdict can only be for what you have seen, as opposed to what you haven't seen.

I think that's more than fair.

If you had judge movies on the 15min mark:-

The Green Room - the band hasn't even been on stage yet.
The Rock - Nic Cage is still back at home with his wife.
The Revenant - the bear scene hasn't happened yet.
Antman - He hasn't even got his suit.
The Groundhog Day - the loop hasn't even begun, it's still the first day.
Taken - his daughter hasn't been taken yet.
Ironman - the weapon demo in the desert hasn't even happened yet.
Home Alone - Kevin's family hasn't even left the house for holiday.
Ferris Buellers Day Off - His friends are still in class.
Die Hard - Nothing has begun, not even seen a gun yet.
Back to the Future - You haven't even seen Doc Brown yet. The car park scene hasn't happened.
Splash - Darryl Hannah hasn't appeared on screen yet.
Mulholland Drive - Naomi's character hasn't even shown up.
Jerry Maguire - He hasn't quit.
Gone Girl - Rosamund Pike's character is still on screen, she hasn't "gone" yet.

See what I mean? If you had stopped these films at the 15min mark, you would have missed the entire point of the movie. Taken? Taken what?! He hasn't even said "I have a special set of skills", all you have seen thus far his him having lunch with his ex-wife and daughter.

So yes, feel free to stop movies after 15mins if you don't enjoy it but that cannot be the true reflection of the whole movie and you should not call judgement on it either.
