Apple becomes most valuable firm of all time

Its interesting how the company has seemed very lost since Jobs passed away like the Apple Freight Train has lost its driver... its amazing how much influence and control he had over his company, even Gates leaving Microsoft didnt really have as bigger impact as Jobs dying but I guess that Microsoft had longer to get ready and to terms with Gates leaving.

Stelly

Microsoft was always at the top of their game with a narrow scope of products and I suspect Gates was a far better leader tbh.

Apple relies a LOT on brand image. They are a fashion company really and they lost their head fashion guru.

I wouldn't entertain anything other than Apple when it comes to Phones/Tablets. My family have no end of trouble with Android equipment because they want to save a few bob. Costs them more in the long run.

Makes me wonder how given some of the crap they produce.

Soldered memory, soldered ssd's, soldered CPU's, soldered gpu's, batteries that are a nightmare to replace. Laptops hitting 95c because their cooling solutions are woefully inadequate. Just form over function crap in a nice shiny box.

I've not had any apple products in years. I had a Nano and Touch a number of years ago but due to things breaking a lot and itunes being the worst piece of software in the world I got rid. I don't spend over £200 on a phone so they aren't ever considered before getting a new phone. i do feel as though many people just get apple for the sake of it, not that the product is the best choice for them but it's the familiar one. Or they do what my GF did and change from a £800 iphone to a £200 andriod then complain that andriod isn't as good as apple, wonder why?

I enjoy my Apple products. I have an iPhone SE, an iPad Air and my partner has an iPhone 6 which will probably be upgraded when they next release new products (although we won't be upgrade to the latest generation). They've probably got a few more years in them.

That said, I think the competition is now at the point where the experience and quality is just as good and you could save a lot of money there.

I think the more important point here is that Apple still exists at all. A world with just Android/Windows wouldn't be good.

Apple have always been form over function. Like I said, they are fashion items.

When your more than an end user, Macs are *****. You find out how badly made they really are. Including their OS.

Cooling aside but from a design point of view isnt soldered just better in every way?

Cheaper, more compact, more reliable, less parts, simplified manufacturing etc yes

The only downside is upgradability/repair but neither of those are really in Apple's design brief no one buys an apple product expecting to add thier own parts

Apple make great hardware, I just don't understand why they feel they need to be so restrictive on what you can do with your phone. My S9+ can basically do anything a PC can, on my iPhone I'd struggle to transfer video files across because I had to use iTunes and they needed to be in a specific format. Plus there's no expandable memory, can't now use your own headphones. Way too restrictive on what is otherwise great hardware.

They're essentially disposable PC's, once you spec it out in the store that's what it stays at for its lifetime. All it means is that any repairs etc cost much more than what they would as they will change the entire motherboard Instead of just the faulty part.

They used to let people upgrade parts but these days theyre going back to how they were in the 80s and 90s with everything locked down. They're even meant to be ditching Intel in favour of their own in house CPUs.

Soldering parts on won't improve anything.

They are basically selling you a less capable and less future proof PC for double the price. The components are the same, only difference is the BIOS which is OFC locked down so you can't do anything with it.

With the way the world is going with regard to waste, its a shame companies are not taken to task with this sort of lock down behavior.

I've never once upgraded a cpu in a laptop.....ever

hard drives and memory on the other hand ;-)

Yup, cpu is reasonable as you rarely hear of a cpu dying compared to other components. Soldering in ram, ssd, riveting in the keyboard are all measures to make sure the laptop has a pretty limited lifespan and that you need to fork over more money once one of the soldered components ***** the bed. That video i posted above of Louis Rossman shows a lot of this, to even replace a keyboard you have to remove 50-100 rivets and rethread the holes. A fisher price baby's first pc probably has more user friendly upgrade options than the apple equivalent.

It’s interesting how people have different expectations. Something I do not do is transfer videos to my smartphone. Never mind the fact that my life doesn’t give me enough time to waste watching videos, who in this world wants to watch videos on such a small screen anyway?

If he'd have gone straight to a doctor rather than trying to cure himself through meditation and diet, he might still be with us.

Unfortunately he was still in hippy mode with regard to some aspects of his life, health being one of them. I actually miss his keynotes and watching the audience get bombarded with a massive torrent of bull**** and lapping it all up.

Probably the tens of millions that have netflix and youtube (amongst other programs) installed on their phones?
