Virgin Media Discussion Thread

That announcement escaped me, would be interesting to see in real terms how "honest" that statement is ;)

Well I left a post on the help forum at Virgin Media, and not surprisingly there was zero response.

The fact I was having great performance for the first 3 weeks or so then utterly unplayable on two different games (both of which I've invested in) has really triggered me.

I've done a speed test and get a decent upload speed of about 5 mb. Upload of about 20ish mb.

Yet when it comes to crunch time of a constant rate needed for multiplayer games, this package I'm with is not cutting the mustard folks.

Recently switched from BT to Virgin last month, about three weeks into the month my ping speed on various PC games has been awful. From about tolerable, to almost unplayable in multiplayer games.

My FPS stays above 30 but the ping speed is awful.

Have I been conned into a service that they throttle after you use so much of an 'allowance'. I was paying slightly more each month with BT but I never had any issues like this.
Welcome to VMs shocking internal network. Some people get lucky, most don't. You're most likely in a heavily congested part of their network.

Well here's the thing, I'm not on the Vivid 350 package but the 150 package. So I might be SOL on this.

Like I said get over to thinkbroadband and get a Broadband Quality Monitor set up so you can get a visual sense of what is happening with your connection and at what times armed with that information you have a much greater chance of targeting what needs sorting.

Here's the kicker, they only recently laid a load of brand new virgin cables all over the area too. Figured it would be hyper-speeds due to that, how wrong I was.

Means nothing, the brand new cables just connect up your house.

They still have to connect up to the same old congested VM core network. :p

Does anyone have a better deal then £27 a month for 100Mb?

Last week I signed up for Player TV, 100Mbps, Talk Weekend for £29/Month but with £144 cashback on Quidco (Effectively making it £17/Month, if you look at it like that). Not sure if the offer still stands or not?

So Sky internet was horrendously slow so I'm back with Virgin as a new customer on a better deal than when I was an existing customer.

I just bought a Netgear XR500 from auction so the SH3 is back in modem mode and my speeds are:

Will keep an eye on the thinkbroadband log once I'm up and running

Here's the results from think broadband:

@davisdavid What package did you sign up with mate? Vivid 150 or the top banana one?

I've setup that monitoring thing. This should be the link:

Tonight i've come home to find our wifi was dropping out.

Quick phone call to VM and apparently our SH power levels were incorrect. So they sent down the new levels and it all seems fine again.

couple of questions though, and apologies for my severe lack of technical knowledge.

We have the 350mb package.

First. Are the power levels below ok?

Second. A recommended router to aid in Wi-Fi range and performance so i can place the router in modem mode.

Seems to be a bit of a postcode lottery with VM. Previously had fibre it and it was generally very good/quick, but moved house 20+ miles away and it's considered the poor option, my father in law about 2 miles away didn't pay for his for 6 months because he could only get a couple of mb speeds until they upgraded his local netwrok. We can't get it because we're in a small pocket of houses that weren't cabled in. When I tried to start a cablemystreet campaign locally it was clear that those nearby who did have it, were less than impressed. So no takers and no chance at the moment.
