Boris and the burka

As long as it fits within the remits of what is considered 'public decency' then anyone should be allowed to wear what the hell they like.

I am certainly no fan of Islam and I believe that its an oppressive and dangerous religion. However the 'rub' is this. When women wearing burkas etc have been asked on how they feel about a ban I have seen a number of interviews and ALL of then have stated that they wear it out of choice and not because of some cultural or religious duress.

Make of that what you will

Of course we could interpret that as BS, and that they are towing the line despite what they may honestly feel about it. However on face value, if they are happy with it, then let them wear it.

In respect of security however. They should be asked to remove it when and where it is required.

Making exceptions to accommodate the culture of other countries at the expense of our own, as well as security concerns is downward road.

When do we stop?

I 100% agree that we should not make concessions to any culture if it infringes and tries to come at the expense of an embedded value system that we have in the UK.

And as mentioned I am no fan of Islam however I would question the 'expense' of a Burka though.

The people calling for a ban, what do you think would actually happen?

I am pretty sure the women being forced to wear them will still be forced to wear them and the few women that choose to wear them, will continue to do so out of choice. Are we going to start fining and punishing women being forced to wear them?

As for security concerns, I can't help but feel that argument is a bit of a stretch when pushing for a ban in all public places. I can understand having a ban in high security places for identification purposes.

Banning or attacking a popular religion never seems to work out that well. It just seems to create more fanatics on both sides

I'm against anything that covers the face as it's not good for social cohesion, Hijab aren't too bad but head scarves look a lot nicer and less oppressive.

How the left have managed to turn the Burqa into a symbol of freedom I have no idea, they are truly masters of spin.

The only ones that should be allowed in any public spaces are the Hijab and Khimar, the face should always be visible, if it wasn't for the religious pretense it wouldn't be allowed under any other circumstances

Exactamente!

Sounds like he’s appealing to the harder right.
I would argue he's more appealing to the left, hence him specifically pointing out that the Burka is a repressive cultural tool and has nothing to do with religion.

If he was aiming for the right then surely he would have been trying to link it with Islam not highlight the disconnection.

He's not calling for them to be banned, he's just criticising them.

But he isn't providing any intelligent criticism in a well reasoned and mature manner. He is making insensitive and abusive comments.

There are plenty of valid reason to critique the use of Burkas, and even a 8 year old could present them in a more suitable manner.

Boris should be removed formt he aprty, he is an absolute discrace. It is not like this is a one-off event, he has a torrid history of inappropriate comments and abhorrent views.

Who on the Left has turned the Burka into a symbol of freedom?

You will find most people on the left also disapprove of the Burka due to the symbolic reason for wearing them and the subjugation of Muslim women, however, the left largely wont agree to banning them as that is a restriction of personal freedom.

Johnston has been getting a bit of a hammering recently and by appealing to the hard right he is trying to get back a supporter base. It has nothing to do with the issue, it is about Boris and Boris's future attempt on No 10.
