Boris and the burka

But he isn't providing any intelligent criticism in a well reasoned and mature manner. He is making insensitive and abusive comments

He was an interesting pick for foreign sec...

Then again, so is Jeremy Hunt. His recent Japanese-Chinese mixup would have been bad enough if he didn't know the person he was talking about but his own wife...

No, it wasn't. But perhaps you should be more questioning and ask why Johnson, fresh from government and with all manner of more significant issues affecting the nation at present, has chosen to dredge up a topic that conveniently panders to his right / far right supporters. Does anyone sincerely believe that he cares about this issue?

I think it is something to begin to bolster support for him once again, for his next attempt at power - most likely a run at the leadership. And so that's why I gave my original response - my view that he's dangerous and unfit to hold public office. He serves his own interests, not that of the country.

I dont hate Boris. My thread is about him and the burka. Not interested in his political aspirations. If i were i would have started a thread about that as a topic.

The utter incompetence of these individuals is breath-taking and entirely comical if it wasn't for the fact; this is our Government. The UKs entire political landscape is an utter joke and farce. Personally, I feel completely politically bereft.

There are plenty of valid reason to critique the use of Burkas, and even a 8 year old could present them in a more suitable manner.

Boris should be removed formt he aprty, he is an absolute discrace. It is not like this is a one-off event, he has a torrid history of inappropriate comments and abhorrent views.

He's provided valid criticism though, he's done so in his usual style too. People are just miffed/triggered because it is a subject related to Muslims. I don't see why he should need to be super sensitive of this topic because of that.

Calling people a letterbox is not valid criticism, it is childish and offensive and such language should never be used by a politician.

I don't think so. The women I know who wear the burqa have it forced on them by the husband or father. The women who decide to wear it by choice are often arrogant.

I think it originally comes from Saudi Arabia culture, and seems to be about not being seen by men as all men will pounce on a woman if they see any of her skin.

I think the Islam religion in UK is being manipulated in to an extreme version, and sadly a lot of British Muslims are falling for it.

I know lots of muslim people. I will ask them about the burka and see what they say. I have spoken to a few who wear one and it is difficult conversing. Its worn, i believe, as a statement. I bet many think it is a must to wear one. That it is in the koran. I am sure many are misguided by their families / husbands etc.

The head scalf is worn quite a lot around where i work. This is not in any way offensive or overpowering.

As much as it loathes me to agree with him, I kinda agree with him but not to the extent of a wholesale ban.
As a muslim I hate the burka as there is nothing in Islam that says a woman must wear one. From my understanding it says a woman should dress modestly, nowhere does it say she must be covered from head to toe in a black garment.
Plus in this hot weather, I don’t know how they cope lol.

But you know Boris is going to Boris, I think his term of a letterbox was wholly stupid of him. If he said that it makes people feel uncomfortable then fair enough but usage of letterbox was beyond stupid. But as I said it’s Boris so we can’t expect any better of him.

It isn’t in the Quran, and you are right majority of the women who wear one are forced by their parents or husbands. Who use it as an excuse to control their wives/daughters.
It’s just a shame they are brainwashed by outright lies. But I know some who have worn it in the past but no longer do due to them realising that it was a control thing rather than a religious thing.

Quite quite old boy, especially by a pillar of society such as old Boris ;)

Do you feel "calling people a letterbox" (and perhaps the plural, letterboxes....) should be added to the growing list of racial hate speech terminology?

Perhaps you should post a letter (carefully, pillar boxes are red, not black) to your MP?

I don't see why not. It's just because they happen to be Muslims.

If he had an issue with say builders coming into his surgery with no shirt on and called them say "cavemen" no one would bat an eye lid.

If he was talking about kids on skateboards in his local Tesco car park no one would care.

It's just we're conditioned to be super sensitive when talking about anything relating to minority groups. In effect treating them differently, quite refreshing to see that he doesn't change his usual colourful language in order to pander to political correctness.

So... We shouldn't be sensitive to minority groups?

What and who in your opinion should we be sensitive to?

In what context?

Hows about we start with the one that we're talking about.

BTW, you don't half come up with some half baked comparisons for someone who continually moans about strawman. Builders? Kids on skateboards?

Seeing as we're there though, could you please explain how you think that people aren't sympathetic to builders and kids on skateboards? I think people generally are. Certainly a lot more sympathetic to them then they are muslim women in burkas.

In the context we're talking about I thought I'd made my views clear that we shouldn't need to pander to certain groups when we'd be happy to criticise others in a similar situation.

I don't think you understand what a straw man argument is if you think I've used one there.

Head scalf is fine. I just want to see the face, but if someone in a face vale wants to talk to me i'll stop them and ask them to remove it if they want to carry on the conversation, if they won't, then the conversation is over. They need to intergrate and part of that is communication using our faces, otherwise i might as well talk to you over the phone and it's never ever the same
