Boris and the burka

You can argue till you're blue in the face about the nuances and subtleties of Boris' comments but he absolutely knows, and intelligent posters here know, that this is the worst kind of dog-whistle politics. This is not about sparking a balanced debate, it's about him winning support from the further right without totally denying himself the platform afforded by being a prominent Conservative politician.

He couldn't care less what people in the middle think.

Quite.

He's a politician. This is what they do to rally people. He's tapped in to a feeling a lot of people have.

The face covering is not required in Islam, and sadly people have been duped in to thinking it is.

I do note that the usual suspects have come forward to condemn Boris Johnson and of course the media must be seen as being totally non-Islamophobia so these people who are calling out Boris are getting plenty of air time. Yet although Boris Johnson's choice of words might be suspect his general point was pretty sound.

It's not dog whistling it's a call for a sensible ban on a garment that has no other function other than to isolate and oppress women. Half of Europe has already banned it because it's counter to modern culture/society.

The mentality around Burkas is the same one that led to the grooming/rape of thousands of white children because they were asking for it by the way they were dressed, that is to say not covered up from head to toe.

It certainly does. But you will find that with most religious texts. And interpretation leads to stupidity.

You know how to use Google right?

Why should I or anyone else go and try and back up your claim, thats on you.

Make a statement as fact then its up to YOU to back it up not me

So why not criticise the men who force the women to wear them?

Instead he's mocked the women themselves and "tapped in to a feeling a lot of people have"...

I don't believe he has mocked the women themselves, he has certainly mocked the garment in his speech, which has certainly d a lot of debate.

It appears we British are expected to tolerate a faction of women walking around looking like something off Doctor Who, whilst keeping within strict dress codes when even just visiting their land of origin, (because of well, you know, respect for their culture...).

It is the women who are wearing it, and who are under the delusion that it is something to do with Islam. The only way to make someone re-think what they did is by calling it in to question.

The only shocking thing really is that we heard some plain speaking language. It's not something I would say, but that is normal language for a lot of people.

It really is 1984 when people are getting more offended by a word than the actual issue.

Err, no. This is NOT Speakers Corner thankfully. And some of it is quite literally on the Wikipedia page for Burqa. So you can stop frothing at the mouth

You make a statement,
I and others ask for some proof,
You say use google
We make the point that you make a statement you should back it up
You then insult me/people

Very classy.

If its that easy to find proof of your statement why have you wasted you time in your "google it" posts. Wouldn't it be easier and more satisfying to prove me and others wrong ?

It's quite literally in the Qu'ran, do you want me to point you to the specific hadiths? It's the whole reason you know, that's there's a debate about interpretation / taking something literally. You're ignorance is astounding, stop making yourself look stupid.

*Edit* just seen you're other posts. Yup, I don't argue with ignoramus, blocked.

So that would be a no to you pointing it out then?

So why say you'll quote it? Or are you, like myself and others clearly suspect, just a troll that's full of crap?
Also the irony of you calling someone ignorant and saying they're making themselves look stupid...

Weird that someone would offer to point in the right direction but then suddenly get cold feet and a little confrontational.

I agree with you. I just don't think Johnson should be saying that already oppressed women, who let's be frank, get enough abuse from people in the street as already, look like letterboxes and bank robbers. It's not a good thing to encourage and empower verbal abuse against minorities no matter the issue.

That just shows that no only do you not understand what a strawman is, but you don't even understand context. The forum (and the universe) doesn't revolve around you and what you think. You weren't putting forth anything.

Yes I was, it isn't difficult, I put forth an argument. I wasn't misrepresenting someone else's argument. This has already been pointed out to you twice now...

The thread is about Boris Johnson and his nonsense. Not about you. So therefore you're countering an argument (that Boris is being a **** about muslims) with your strawman builder ********. It's a stonewall strawman. In hi-vis.

It isn't a straw man, I wasn't;'t countering an "argument", I made no reference to an argument - I put forwards an argument.

I don't want to discuss this any further. It's like arguing with a child who doesn't listen and makes up their own definitions of words. And that's not an "ad hominem" btw before you start with your other favourite. Just a passive observation.

Could say the same thing about you tbh... you're a bit of a time waster who hasn't paid attention to the argument put forth and can't really respond to it so you've just gone off on a tangent.
