Boris and the burka

It isn't an entirely different debate, it is fundamental to this in that his behaviour here isn't radically different to how he talks/writes in general. The main source of controversy is simply down to the old identity politics - it is a result of who he spoke about and not the manner in which he spoke.

I disagree with an awful lot of what he says but I don't remember the last time he made derogatory remarks about the attire of catholic nuns or the Amish in a political comment piece? Next time he does I will be equally happy to demand an apology, the old it's just the way bumbling Boris is defence is tiresome and dull he is no longer a 15 year old school boy but a man who aspires to lead our country.

Fairly sure a nun's habit shows the whole face. I don't recall any letterboxes with large round holes, or any bank robbers that will go to the effort of concealing their hair and neck but not their face.

That's just his method of politics. It's semi successful. He's got to where he is now off of it, and being a conservative mayor of very labour London is no mean feat. It's conceited and contrived but it is what it is.

Also please don't mistake this for advocacy, it is observation.

Oh not at all. But for me it's enough, how many more times does he need to embarrass us as a country? He only cares about one thing and if he did meet Steve Bannon, likely trying to more Trump than before. His actions about the British woman locked up in an Iranian jail should be enough for him never to enter politics alone.

did you see my point? ......................................it's over here!

My point was that I don't care which religious group he makes derogatory remarks about I would expect an apology so for me this is nothing to do with the fact it's Musilm Women he is insulting just the fact that his choice of words was wrong and he should be big enough to admit it and say sorry.

Well I don't think you're going to get one, nor do I think he should.

Can you recall a political comment piece where he was critical of such attire? Seems a bit moot, there is nothing to suggest that he's got any issue with how the Amish dress etc.. his issue in this case is being unable to see someone's face.

Why do you arbitrarily confine this to select groups though? He's flippant about and towards a whole range of things, people etc.. that's the point I was making.

Is the film Nuns on the Run offensive? Just need to know so I don't let my kids watch if it's going to affect their behaviour in future.

When did Boris's comments become a joke?

The only think I disagree with is his use of the terms bank robbers and letter boxes, both clearly derogatory and both clearly unnecessary, I'm not sure either would be funny in a piece of well done comedy by a professional comedian let alone in a political column by the ever self serving Boris. I have no problem with him expressing his opinion on the Danish ban or discussing the idea of a ban or restrictions in this country if he feel it necessary it is just the choice of language that needs a little more sensitivity. Yes I'm aware he does everything for a reason the sad part being these comments seem to boost his popularity with a certain demographic.
I would take umbrage with Boris's comments too if there were no instances of burkas being used in bank robberies, but there have been and he made a comparison.

As far as I'm aware Naz Shah wasn't forced to apologise after that horrific Rotherham abuse tweet, even if it was posted by accident - on that basis, why should Boris?

I tired this earlier, I was told to "google it" and "educate myself" also "why should I spends time researching this", never did see any prrof or links to parts of the Koran that said anything like this. Just passive aggressive posts and insults.

Look harder

Here’s a hint in case you can’t still grasp what I’m trying to say...it says nowhere in the Quran that a woman should wear a burka. But if you are trying to imply that as a muslim I believe that a woman should be forced to wear one then just lol.

While it's very subtle, retweeting something "by accident" is not the same as opening your mouth and spewing trash out.

No I agree with everything you have said so far Mason ... Particularly this comment -

As I said before, if we are allowed so called "rights" then he should be allowed free speech and to openly disclose his own "personal" opinion. But the media must be make an accurate representation of people in such positions for which peoples opinions form.
Free speech isn't freedom from responsibility he is allowed to say what he wishes and express any opinion but as a public figure who has expressed an interest in leading our country should he do it in a manner which upsets he should be man enough to apologise. Nobody expects him to retract his column but apologising for his choice of words and comparisons is appropriate in the circumstances and would allow him to be the better person.

It’s not though because the comparisons were both good, and funny and provoked debate. There is no reason to apologise.

I would rather a leader that actually said what they thought than said what they should say. At least you know where you stand. Pretty much every policy and opinion someone writes in a column will offend someone. Criticising religion, or religious practices is perfectly valid criticism, and considering MPs make laws, they should be the ones most willing to talk about them not the other way around. Also as every poll I’ve seen majority supports Boris, he has the backing of the people. There is no argument for him to apologise except for his enemies to gain political capital.

I am glad Boris said what he said in the way he said it! No mixing words. No cowering to other peoples so called 'laws'. At least everybody knows where they stand with him.

Despite what people say wearing those islamic clothes is perceived by the wearers as being part of their faith.

One Muslim women, Sabina, who wears the niqab told Sky:
I see it [the niqab] as part of my faith and now it has also become a part of my identity. Which is why I feel so strongly about it.

This is from the article about protests against ban in Denmark. Unsurprisingly (at least to myself), those who protest are mainly muslims and then you have some idiots from parties like the Green party and some active do-gooders.

Its not just a matter of if being an identity to a religion.
