*** The official 2018 MacBook Pro thread (it has six cores and everything!) ***

Congrats... you have your own individual use experience... congrats.

I’ve looked after various enterprise networks.

The last good version of Windows was 7.

And there is still no one who can build something with as good build quality as Apple...

:p

Someone here runs a whole company filled with windows laptops and machines and Said his never had any issues such as what you mentioned.

I don't want to turn this into a Fanboy fight.

Just agree to disagree wnd move on

I switched to the Lenovo P51 last year as I needed more RAM Apple were putting in the MBP at the time. Spec wise it’s a beast but I found some small but very annoying niggles issues.

The biggest issue was Windows inability to handle high resolution. I had a 4K screen in the laptop and it looked terrible in Windows, not to mention it seemed sluggish when trying to resize apps. I would have non of these issues when connected to a lower resolution monitor. I tried Linux but in the end I decided I just missed macOS and switched back with the 2018 MBP and I couldn’t be happier.

There there is the updates, a number of times I had to roll back as it would break something or not apply correctly. It was very frustrating as I had them scheduled out of office hours so sometimes I’d have everything working on a Friday and then broken on Monday morning!

The trackpad - it’s not bad and I have noting negative to say about it but the Mac one is just better IMHO.

My wife is using the P51 and she loves it.

Windows is much improved and I think these days OS is a personal choice but I wouldn’t want to go back to Windows.

I don’t know how you can gloss over the issues in windows so easily. I’m happy to use whatever is best and purposefully went back to windows for a year... hated it... too many issues and annoying bugs.

Linux is still barely viable for daily use for all but the most basic tasks for the average user... or the power user who can customise everything and deal with the code.

Apple still kick out the best OS in the best package.

Well said, I agree with most if not all of these points.

This x 1000. Jesus why are there so many asshats in the Apple forum. No wonder I spend more time on Reddit and Ars. Why does everything have to resort to poo throwing in here. Bloody hell

:D usually just read these threads for the lolz now

So I've spun up a copy of Windows 10 LTSB and will use it extensively in place for a week to see if I can go back. As I work mainly within virtual land I'm hoping it won't effect me too much, I just hate to having to resort to CygWin, etc.

I run a copy of RHEL 7 as a VM in the background anyway (a lot of my target architecture recently has either been RHEL or CentOS).

I usually install babun instead of cygwin. Having the ability to run vagrant/packer and grep, git etc. in one command line is one of the reasons I managed to stick with Windows for so long.

And that's you glossing over the facts and misdirecting... funny the one claiming the f word is the one showing the qualities ;)

I tend to ignore these types of posts. My wife used my old MBP when I got the P51. I missed macOS and she was missing Windows. Everyone has different requirements and preferences.

I would never say to anyone Apple is better than X. I will say: I prefer Apple because it suits me and I love the integration between all the devices. I welcome constructive and honest views but I've got no time for the fanboy stuff.

Holy ****, why have I never seen this! Thank you buddy, much appreciated. Downloading now!

No problem! :)

If, like me, you use vim a lot then you'll find out of the box you cannot paste in vim using right click. There's a few solutions, I use:

Code:
echo "set mouse-=a" >> ~/.vimrc

Have a read of this and feel free to ask me anything else.

I may look at that, I use MobaXterm on Windows at the moment which does everything I need but it's always nice to try alternates.

How I wish there was something similar on macOS, I use iTerm but it's just not the same.

I love MobaXterm, one of the first things I install when working with Windows but even with babun installed it just didn't feel right. I think the biggest problem for me was that I tend to be working with Ansible a lot and although it does work in babun I did find some issues. So, I ended up developing in a centOS VM. This was fine except when I didn't push code to github (usually because I'm rushing out of the office to catch my train) and would want to quickly check something. Now I can write code using Sublime Text, execute in Terminal and if I do forget to push code I don't need to spin up a VM to read it.

Mate if you are ever in West London theres a pint with your name on it!

Will give that a read, thank you :)

I'm a Muslim so I don't drink but you can buy me a coke anytime! :D

ive got 4k panel dell xps and only had one scaling issue with LR but fixed it quite easily, The other programs all are scaled fine.

I do coding, photo editing and video editing on my machines so quite intensive stuff at times.

my dell xps 13 has been solid with the above and i was under huge pressure last week to make a delivery and did so on this windows based laptop.

I think working under stress and pressure on a machine is one valid way fo testing out how good a machine and its software is.

Whats funy is that my macbook pro i had previously was giving me some stability issues but i wont play that down as it was probably because its a 2014 model .

Anyways if macbook pro was same price as a windows one with the old style keyboard they had, i would have seriously considered one as they are excellent well packaged machines but after using the 2017 version and its keyboard for almost a year i was left fustrated and annoyed with the silly touchbar and keyboard. It was a work one and that was what forced me to try windows again with the razer blade 13inch.

Just bought a base spec 15” after deliberating whether to get the 15" or a RAM upgraded 13". I checked them both out in the Apple store and to be fair, the 15" isn’t all that much bigger than my current 2013 era 13” MBP so I thought why not. I was close to getting a Windows laptop again and in fact, I did buy one a little while ago but returned it due to terrible battery life (which I'm aware isn't Windows' fault).

The main things that swayed me were the trackpad and it may seem like a minor thing, but my Windows laptops all lose a fair bit of battery in sleep mode overnight. My work Dell XPS 15 can drop 8-10% if left on in sleep overnight whereas I can leave my MBP in sleep overnight and it'll still be on 100% the next day. The other laptop I had for a while, an HP Omen, also did this, though the battery life on that just plummeted for no reason at all. Not sure if all my Windows laptops have some kind of issues or if that's normal or what, but I have and have had other laptops that do the same sort of thing.

I've still got my Windows laptop needs catered for with my work XPS 15 so figured it was worth a punt. Still feel a bit abused after forking out that much cash for it though but arguably if it lasts me 4-5 years like my current MBP then it's not bad going. To be fair there's nothing really wrong with my current 13" MBP, I just fancied a change and a bit more grunt.

You should not leave it on sleep mode . Use hibernate mode Doesn't drain battery at all but sleep mode does

Yeah, would make sense to do that for the Windows machines, need to get into the habit of it. Don't need to do it on the MBP though so that's one (admittedly very minor) win there too. It just works for my usage pattern. I could even leave it in sleep mode after a full charge and come back to it a couple of days later and it'd still be on 98/99%.

There's no hibernate mode on mac os as far as I know . Just the defaults .some laptops have hibernate on by default though so no tweaking like my old razer blade stealth

On the shutdown prompt, you can tick 'reopen windows after logging back in'. It's probably the closest to hibernate MacOS has.
