Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

I've got a 1080Ti and a 3440x1440 monitor copes extremely well so I must be barmy looking at the new GPUs and thinking if it's worth considering. It's probably just me worried about the 1080ti plummeting in value. Then again who cares if it serves me well?

^^ Or rather most people don't give a flying about HDR right now.

i would say anyone who does not care about hdr (but do care about eyecandy) has either not seen a good hdr example, or does not have a good hdr screen...

because imo when done well, hdr is far bigger wow factor than 4k resolution or a bit of extra shadow detail etc.

hdr is fantastic.... i paid an extra 500 notes for my gamign tv to make sure the hdr was up to scratch

Yeah, no.

I've got HDR on my TV and it's fantastic. What I don't want is HDR burning out the back of my eyeballs because I'm sat around 18 inches from my monitor screen.

HDR is great from across the room but there is no way I want it for hours on end right in my face. All that's going to do is give you eyestrain.

That is why you don't buy 1000nits but 600nits monitor. TVs work better at 1000nits because of the longer distance to the eye.

Awesome to see AMD competing very well in some applications. Shame it’s old tech now.

.

HDR old tech?????

Agreed, love my BenQ, does 4K HDR, HDR 10 and Freesync. Xbox One X games look stunning, they run so smooth Freesync and HDR are awesome.

Well if HDR is your thing then check out the following test data from Hardware Unboxed, in some titles HDR has a 10%+ performance hit and it increases to 13-14% when combined with G-Sync. This was tested with the latest $2000 Acer monitor and to be honest left me shocked!

I love this forum, everyone talking about whether to upgrade or not, or whether nVidia is screwing us! Check out the Steam hardware survey nor July 2018 and you’ll see 1080ti owners represent 1.19% of gamers.

The top #5 are the 1060 (12.5%), 1050ti, 1050, 750ti, and the 960. Given that 6GB of VRAM was only 7% then a lot of those 1060’s must be rocking 3GB of VRAM.

Also thought it interesting the PNY leak was interesting to say that 8GB of system memory was the minimum, with 16GB recommended.

Except you need a decent amount of nits for the HDR effect unless you are using OLED. The more nits, the better the perceived difference between blacks and the light source. My LG B7 is rated at around 650 nits I think - I still wouldn't want to sit 18 inches from it for 4-5 hours.

Yeah that is what we discussed on the previous page, and compared them to Vega 64 HDR benchmarks of the same games & resolution.
Is shocking, even myself couldn't believe the sheer drop of performance in the Titan Xp card. OK, we knew about the GTX1080 has hard times at 4K HDR but not the Titan Xp especially with Gsync on.

@Boomstick777 which Benq monitor you have mate? The EQ3270U or the EL2870U?

I need to buy a second GPU for a rig for my son who I am desperately seeking to wean off console gaming, It’ll only be 1080p gaming, so thinking of going with an RX580 as the Red Dragon models are only £260 even for the most expensive golden model. It would be a waste giving him a 1080ti and whilst a Vega 56/64 is enticing I can’t justify it.

Any thoughts?

Why you want to get him out of console gaming?
80% of the games on PC are console ports, so kinda pointless. Only if he wants to play some PC only games but these are obscure ones like grand strategies (EU4, CK2) etc.
Also might cost you more in the long run and by having no access to PC you have your head safe for all the dodgy things is going to have access to from PC easily compared through console.

Wait, 2.0b only supports 4k @ 60Hz. As a matter of fact one of the main differences between 2.0 and 2.0b is that 2.0b supports HDR. There are some others but I don't recall.
That's great for HDTV but not for PC monitors.

It's not great for Tv's at all.

Lots of tv's next year will be coming with hdmi 2.1 and all the features and bandwidth that come with it and these wont support it.

Bit sad really if they don't end up supporting it considering xbox has for almost a year now.

Well they need to still sell their BFGD monitors that are yet to arrive, wouldn't be much point if u could just buy any other hdmi 2.1 chipset TV next year for the same result: 4k 120hz with VRR, nvidia would shoot themselves in the foot, would much rather milk their proprietary sync as long as possible

He has a laptop for his schoolwork already, the way I look at it is that kids will do what they do and least being a boy aI have less to worry about in some senses at least. These days you can pretty much do anything you want on a smartphone anyway, so I take the view that you warn and prepare them by telling them the Internet is a dangerous place.

Also if he has a new gaming PC then I can justify my plans for a custom loop in a new case, hopefully the Evolv X if Phanteks ever get round to releasing it!
