The house was burgled shortly after we moved in, luckily we came home and disturbed them and they left the bag full of stuff and legged it.

A monitored alarm is now installed but for additional peace of mind I'd like to get a safe installed primarily for secure storage of important documents & valuables.

Interested to get your thoughts on...
- Digital vs key lock
- Installation options - assume that I can securely bolt onto concrete or (slightly less securely) onto wooden floor boards
- Recommended brands & suppliers

If I were a thief and saw a safe that would be the first thing I'd demand to be opened if you were in the house! I have a tiny safe under my stairs but it's just got my passport in it.

Have you thought about a lower tech solution, e.g., putting them in a box under a floorboard, the loft, or somewhere non obvious and out the way?

If they're in the house and making demands I'm assuming they're armed or at least violent - in which case they can have whatever they like - it's all insured :)

Really just want something that's secure enough to act as a deterrent to put off the 'casual' burglar - thinking along similar lines to you with a small safe under the stairs or in a cupboard - for passports and other small valuables that are more of sentimental value.

What about a loaded shotgun in a cupboard? Perhaps out of its case and accidentally tangled in string around the trigger which also is accidentally attached to the door?

You should try some home security like marbles and cans of paint at the top of the stairs.. it worked for Kevin Mccallister.

A gun safe would be a good starter. Bog standard brattonsound ammo safe is £100.

Good enough for someone to keep a firearm in.

interesting thread, yep that's the problem with a safe it becomes the one thing the thiefs want to get their hands on and they can threaten you/hold you to ransom

but on the other side if you are not in and they come across a safe it's going to be impossible or more difficult for them to get your possessions.

what is your budget and how big of a safe do u require? there is one in costco at the moment for about £100 I think it has a card reader
fairly small one too.

I'm aware that you want a safe. But you've already invested in an alarm system which have reputations for being ignored by the police when they call, due to the amount of false alarms.

Why not catch them in action and record them on a CCTV system? At least you and the police will have a good idea what they look like should you be so unfortunate for it happen to you again.

A good size (4TB?) HDD should allow you to keep a months of very high quality recording.

My theory is buy a decent looking locked metal box and hide it somewhere - put a load of junk in it and envelope with 50 quid in it - Then get yourself a good strong plastic box with a lid that seals well and use that for all your bits and pieces - put it in loft and just cover it with loft junk - how many burglars go in loft and if it's like most peoples they won't search to hard.

I think most criminals wear hoodies or masks when doing a blag so CCTV is waste of time - The old boy on corner by me got done for 400 quid at 12.40 in daytime - I happened to see them running up the road but both had heads down and hoodies up - no way could I pick them out in a line up.

The police did spend quite a while here looking at footage on my CCTV but all they got was car coming down and up the road and two yobs running past to get in the car - seems they get dropped off -car drives up road then they run to the car and away.
