Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

If the prices do indeed come out at £450-500 for the 2070, £600-650 for the 2080 and £800+ for the ti, is there any point in bothering with them if the incremental performance bumps speculated are true? Sure, they'll have the ray tracing stuff and a bit more speed but I've yet to be convinced that the ray tracing isn't an Emperors new clothes situation and no way does a 8% performance increase justify paying a higher tier price for a lower tier card.

I mean, why get the 2070 for £450-500 which is slightly better than a 1080, when you can already pick a 1080 up for less than that? That is only amplified on the 2080 which has less ram than the 1080ti and in all likely hood a lot less longevity even though the ti is already 2 years old.

Can we just take a step back, take a breath, forget about how the channel has tried to "prepare us" for this, and think about how utterly ridiculous these prices are, if true? Am I taking crazy pills thinking people are actually considering paying these price? Has the world gone mad?

If it is your hobby and you want a faster card and have the money, what do you suggest we do instead?

I agree. Either Nvidia have played a blinder and are going to surprise everyone with prices cheaper than anticipated (I know, I know) or they'll go for maximum milkage and really put some noses out of joint.

To be honest, I think it's more a case of prices rising in line with the disposable incomes of the enthusiast crowd.

If you're a crusty like me around ~40, the first generation to grow up building their own PCs...you're probably in a position at this stage in your life where you can and some will spend 800 quid on a graphics card. nVidia know this. We know this.

*I'm going for the 2070 if it's around 1080ti perf for < 500 EUR

Had my 1080Ti since release day and I normally wait 2-3 years for an upgrade so I got some time yet. It also still seems like a bit of a powerhouse at 2560x1440 so no real rush. I am of course still interested in seeing what these offer when it comes to raw power and new features though! :D

I can confirm. AIBS only received the cards very recently. Who or what will be being released at launch I'm not sure but the timeframe is definitely very tight. NVIDIA are playing everything very close to the chest as per usual.

got this message just now

Leaks are not good
Make daddy nv sad

made me laugh - not sure who is worse... nvidia for not releasing engineering designs or amd for releasing everything bar the GPU haha

I'd love to upgrade but not at any cost and not at the prices getting banded around here.

Great way to force the next generation onto consoles. My boy and all his friends play on an xbox or PlayStation. He's banging on about the next gen already. Not interested in pc gaming.

For me I think it's only (extremely relatively) do-able if the performance increases are as we are accustomed to with the xx80 and xx80ti as shown in the past couple of generations. If only small gains, it for sure is mental.

Would they have been interested in PC Gaming anyway though? My son saved up and bought his own PC, a Ryzen 1600 + 1060 and it games brilliantly. He didn't have to sell his soul either.

Skip a gen. That's been my mentality since the 6800GTX. That was the first day one flag ship card I ever bought for HL2/Doom 3. Have never purchased another card inside 18-24mths, in this case it's been 3 years. I've been sitting on my 980TI, overhauling my rig to Coffee Lake from Haswell, adding SSD's and recently a 55' LG OLED TV. Right now I'm foaming at the mouth for that bump to 4K 60hz Ultra that's why I can justify paying day one hype prices. Because I know I will have at least 12 mths at the pinnacle of gaming GFX followed by 6 to 12 mths of settings tweaks. Jumping from a 1080/1080ti to 2080/2080ti is a case of more money then sense for me.

That's not necessarily the smartest thing to do. I've upgraded every gen and I never had to spend too much - second hand cards hold their value pretty well on Ebay if they're not too old.

I'll be getting a 2080Ti, happy to pay £800-850, any more than that and I'll just wait for a couple of deals to kick in.
