Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

If it is your hobby and you want a faster card and have the money, what do you suggest we do instead?
Totally. We don't have any choice.

nVidia releases new xx80 card at £800, £1000, £1200... what choice do we have? Not buying it? That's not a choice at all.

We just got to pay what Jensen asks.

At least at the end of the day we can sit back, play our console games at 4000% the cost of owning a console, and be glad we aren't console peasants.

I reckon SRP for the crappy reference blowers will go up as follows:

x060: $249 -> $279
x070: $379 -> $449 (note: 1070 Ti launched at $449)
x080: $549 -> $599 (note: this card is much cheaper than SRP now)
x080 Ti: $699 -> $799 (note: this card is slightly cheaper than SRP now)

It's totally a choice.

My 970 is still perfectly fine for playing all the latest PC games. It will continue to be good enough for a good while yet unless I *choose* to get a 4k monitor. Or I just choose to upgrade to something.

No-one's being priced out of PC gaming, there's just this premium end that's slowly expanding to cater for people with large wallets.

I never said anything about choice. Just that it's someones hobby, they enjoy buying things for their hobby and have the money to do so. I'm not sure why that is seen as such a bad thing on here. I get it that the prices are pushing out people with less disposable income but it is like that in many sectors and also, there are other options. A Vega now at a reasonable price for example.

I would never criticise anyone for their financial situation but it does come off as butt hurt. People are entitled to spend their disposable income on what they want.

Would they have been interested in PC Gaming anyway though? My son saved up and bought his own PC, a Ryzen 1600 + 1060 and it games brilliantly. He didn't have to sell his soul either.

They wont be now, my 2 sons are 7 and 10, they have an Xbox, all their friends at school either have Xbox or PS, my kids play on Tablets, phones or Consoles, they look at me like a dinosaur when im on my PC. Pretty much anything im playing on it, they say "can i play that on the Xbox?" they have access to laptops (mine and wifes) and they only ever play Roblox or whatnot on those.

I told them id build them a PC, they said "Dad we use your Laptop for school work, we only play games on our console or tablets".

Going further, all their friends are the same, these kids watch their parents play consoles, then they want consoles, they all play the same types of games like Fifa, Rocket League, Minecraft, Lego Games etc, and these games are available on their consoles.

PC Gaming is going to miss out on the newer generation of kids if consoles keep getting better.

It's potentially as bad for you (aka the "people with endless disposable") as it is for the people who find they can no longer afford PC gaming.

The smaller the pool of PC gamers; the less money they have for games owing to being skint from putting it all on green; the more people turn to console gaming (me and a whole bunch of others here)... well, all of that leaves PC gaming marginalised.

I'm more looking forward to PS5 at this point than anything coming for PC. Because I know every new component for PC will each individually cost more than a console. Zen2? Probably at least £200. Navi? At least £300. New mobo at least £200. New RAM at least £150.

There are tons of us with older hardware that don't see PC prices as in any way proportional to the difference in quality between PC and console gaming (we aren't throwing our old PCs away so can still do productivity stuff on them - we're talking just about gaming here).

I think the conversation was more about PC pricing pushing out kids but that doesn't have to be the case. The Playstation brought gaming to the masses and so it's no surprise kids want consoles over PC's. It's always been the case unless they have some friends who play WoW of LoL.

Different hobby? (I'm only half kidding). Look, I have been in the game for the past 25+ years, have a superlative amount incomings and savings to buy this stuff at/above the prices being touted. That said, there comes a time when you need to step back and really take a look at how much having the balls-to-the-wall best solution is worth to you (relative to other things and other hobbies). There's also the principle of it for me i.e. nV taking advantage of folks due to lack of competition. £900 is well past that line in the sand for me.

This is the first place where I've read PC gaming is in any kind of trouble. Didn't most publishers realize they made more money from PC than consoles just a while ago?

PC gaming is fine, Nvidia alleged pricing is not going to destroy anything.

I’ll pay whatever the cost is, it’s my hobby and I don’t put a spending limit on my hobbies.

And I’m also supporting the future of PC gaming kind of

Maybe I should take up bird watching instead

My emphasis. I really don't think you can credit Sony with that. Even excluding hardware from the like of Atari and Coleco that pioneered home consoles, you have the small fact of a company called Nintendo and their products that really did bring gaming to the masses.

The Playstation brand may have sold in excess of half a billion consoles, but they wouldn't be here without Nintendo; quite literally!

I totally see that and it's a shame if old PC stalwarts are leaving but PC gaming has always been niche in comparison to consoles, especially outside of MMO's and LoL type games. I guess the high prices are keeping it niche. For me it's more than just about the games though, it's a hobby. As was mentioned above as well, upgrading each gen keeps costs a bit lower. My 1080ti would probably get £500ish depending on what the 2070 comes in at and so a 2080ti is a £400 outlay.

Maybe we grew up in different gaming groups but I started on a ZX81 and from then until the original Playstation, gaming was geeky and uncool. I've loved Nintendo all my life but Sony took it to the masses and made gaming cool.

Why don't you have a Titan V?

What made you choose a 1080 Ti instead?

Given that you just said you don't have a limit, why wouldn't you go for the absolute best?

Your words don't seem to match your actions.
