Vega 64 or Nvidia 1080

VEGA 64:
Better performance in non VR games.
Free sync.
No spyware in drivers.
Great mining card. (Might retain more value)

GTX 1080:
Better performance in VR games.
Lower power consumption.
Ansel.

Takes your pick, both are solid cards. 1080 Ti if you can get a good price though (;

If I had the choice right now between Vega 64 and my GTX1080 I would swap in an instance, buying into nvidia is a mistake long term.

Wait until RTX2080 is released though, it will affect prices.

I'm in the same boat, currently using a Fury Nitro. Don't have a Freesync screen though, just 144hz.

I've got £550~ put to one side but I'm thinking of just getting a Vega64 instead of waiting for the 1080ti to drop in price?

I was in the same boat as you. I also have a 144hz monitor with no freesync and had a Fury pro but the card got fried by a faulty Psu power cable. I wanted a Vega 56 but they were selling for £800 then so I got an overpriced 1070 instead. Now that the prices are down I sold it and got a £400 Vega 64 and im happy with it. Not interested in 2080s etc way too expensive for for what they are and I think they will just end up forgotten about in a year or 2 when better cards that can actually do ray tracing well come along. Nobody will give a dam about these cards and they will be selling on mm for peanuts mark my words.

My vega is noisy at full tilt, however I game with headphones on.

When the card is not utilized the fans turn off so it's silent when I'm just web browsing, coding etc

I kept disabling Freesync yesterday to see if I could go without it and......Nah, it's just too good.
When is it you can see the difference with it in? Kinda want to give it a try myself like I'm missing out now but I chose 144hz over freesync. Also couldn't go without that so any new monitor needs to have both.

I thought AMD had better drivers considering rumours I hear NV cripple older cards in drivers?
They don't cripple them as such they just don't bother optimising for them once chips with a new architecture are being sold. AMD don't have the money to keep launching new designs so they keep with what they have and do what can with the software to remain competitive. Next year you will probably find that the Vega64 is ahead of the 1080 in most new titles as Nvidia will focus on the driver development for Turing.

Just went for the Vega 64, got some change left over so if I sell my Fury I should be able to get a nice Freesync screen too :)
