Aspiring chef with dwarfism offered job by Gordon Ramsey

I'm sure he could get a stand of some description that he can kick from one place to another and it locks in place when he puts his weight on it.

Said the man who has never been in a professional kitchen.

Loads of rushing around with hot pans, boiling water, hot oil, sharp knives and you want to have a stool floating around that could be in any number of random locations at any minute, doesn't sound dangerous at all.

It's just totally impracticable, sorry but there's just times when common sense has to prevail and it's tough luck. There's loads of able bodied people who aren't physically capable of doing all manner of jobs they'd like to but have to do something else instead, I thought disabled people were big on equality? Well here's a tough lesson on it. Man up and crack on with something else, there's nothing stopping him from choosing a different career and becoming a high quality home chef in his own time.

If he's hell-bent on being a chef his best bet is trying to save up the cash or get investment to start his own business, something like a small cafe where there are no other kitchen staff required and so the kitchen can be designed around his own specific needs.

He had to replace the last one.

Can the lad actually cook is all that matters. What's he supposed to do - live on benefits all his life instead of earning a living ?

Citing Health and Safety is a convenient excuse for doing naff all to adjust the working area to suit.

Well if you adjust the working area then it can't be uses by the rest of your staff.

Plus how exactly is he meant to love things about etc?

I'm all for equal opportunities but he s basicaly jist going to criple any kitchen that has more than one member of staff cooking and will require an assistant to help him.

What is he supposed to do?

Pretty much any job that isn't so physically demanding?

If he wanted to be a fighter pilot should a jet be retrofitted? Bus? Firetruck?

Could work in an office with the addition of a new chair

What you did there. I see it.

Golly, you best send him and Gordon an email to let them know the error of their ways :p

Correct though, never worked in a professional kitchen, too many ******* in such a small space for my liking!

The peofesional college already has that's the problem

Just reading the story properly and it says the college didn't actually refuse him, but rather...

"The college has undertaken a review process to ensure all the appropriate adjustments to the kitchens that Louis needs to allow him to safely and successfully commence his course, and to ensure his needs are met throughout his time at college are in place."

"We would like to state that at no point has Louis been told he could not attend his course but both Louis and Mrs Makepeace have been informed that the adjustments Louis requires will need to be agreed before an unconditional offer can be given."

Much ado about nothing, really, don't even know why it's newsworthy, don't even know why I bothered commenting on it now :P

Yeah forge has said that he said they refused went to the papers went on tv saying he was refused dog can Ramsey waded in and the college had to make a segment saying we didn't refuse him here's the truth.

He now says he wouldn t take the apprenticeship if they did approve him.

So as somone mentioned before they spent a lot of money assessing the requirements and he s not gonna go anyway so it was all wasted.

"His mother Pauline, 56, claimed the course leader told her Louis should not do the course as he would not be allowed to work in a restaurant kitchen."

Maybe that was caring advice from the course leader, but all the platitudes seem to have been issued by the college after the story broke, which isn't quite the same.

However I agree that some people should have to accept that their physical traits mean they're not suited to a given role.

College said that was never said.

I'm guessing "maybe he should look at a more suitable course" was said to the mother, mother plus compo face in the paper r",told me he should go on a differnt course"

Tbh i can see the issue with health and safety, a kitchen is a crowded working environment and whilst you can adjust it to make it suitable for someone of smaller stature you cant do it at the same time as keeping it suited to people of normal stature (which will be the majority).

If this was a case of him working alone in his own area that's fine, but that's not the environment a professional chef has to deal with.

Short version is either he's gonna be smacking his head off stuff being carried by others, or they're gonna be smacking shins off the platforms he needs to reach the counters.

I imagine there's tons of jobs he'll never be able to do.

Just pulling one out my behind... bus driver. You think any company is going to have one of their buses adapted so he can drive it?

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Many jobs will simply not be available to him.

Actually i'd imagine bus driving is one of the professions that would be acceptable, as he just needs one bus to be adapted and he wont be using it at the same time as someone else so quick detatch pedal extensions and whatnot is realistic.

What wont work is when adaptations need to be in place in a manner that interferes with others doing their jobs, like a kitchen where several people will be using the same equipment at the same time.

I imagine the modification is not cheap. Then maybe he only drives for them for 6 months and leaves... (it's a risk).

Why would a company take on that extra cost when there will be no shortage of able-bodied candidates looking to drive buses?

The reality is life dealt him a cruel hand, and he'd be well advised to look for work where his size isn't a factor. Matador, maybe...
