Aspiring chef with dwarfism offered job by Gordon Ramsey

I imagine the modification is not cheap. Then maybe he only drives for them for 6 months and leaves... (it's a risk).

Why would a company take on that extra cost when there will be no shortage of able-bodied candidates looking to drive buses?

The reality is life dealt him a cruel hand, and he'd be well advised to look for work where his size isn't a factor. Matador, maybe...

Problem is they're required to make reasonable adjustments, and given for example "reasonable adjustments" is known to include things like installing wheelchair ramps then some extended pedals defo will.

In the kitchen we have a different scenario, you cant make adjustments without adversely affecting safety.

Theres definately a line yes, but if there wasnt a line then what would happen to the disabled folk out there who want to work? Surely the adjustments to help them get into employment are cheaper than casting them aside and throwing benefit money at them.

I'm still up for an all dwarves restaurant. I could see it being quite popular, bit fetish like with some people.

Restaurant Snow White.

But there are other jobs... it's not a binary choice between bus driver/chef and life on benefits...

Basically my thoughts. Work places are supposed to make reasonable adjustments.

Reasonable. Putting people's lives at risk is not reasonable.

The only way it could be done reasonably would be with an entirely custom-built kitchen staffed solely by people of approximately the same height (because it would be dangerous to anyone much taller)...and that would be unreasonably expensive.

On the subject of bus/coach drivers our driver last week was 4ft 8ins and as wide as high.
I noticed she had loads of adjustable electronic levers to get her in position.

I work in a very busy kitchen and this would not work. Ever.

We have a big long kitchen but very little surplus room. It was fitted to take only a few grand per week but we're taking upto 3k per day just on food. Having a small person working that needs adjustments, height altering equipment will not work what so ever,

He had to replace the last one.

Came here to post this :D

I can see all of the points of view regarding how it would work in a busy commercial kitchen, but that isn't what the article is about and certainly wouldn't be the issue from a discrimination point of view.

He wants to educate himself in catering / hospitality and the college is required to make "reasonable adjustments". I'm sure it could be argued that adapting a kitchen workstation station to suit him for the course would be reasonable.

Whether he then chooses to try and work in a busy commercial kitchen after his qualification is not relevant. As an example there is a whole team of people in the company I work for that have dedicated development kitchens to cook and test new products. It'd be perfectly reasonable to adapt one of the workstations in this scenario.

Which the college were assessing but because they didn't get back to him for "a few days" after saying they needed to assess all the changes he went on tv and to the papers saying theyd refused him due to his size.

Now he's saying he wouldn t go even if they said yes.

Adapting one workstation for him means that's one workstation down for every other class.

Fair point and going straight to the tv/papers seems unreasonable given the college were already reviewing it.

In terms of loss of workstation this is no different to a carpark with disabled bays, or low level checkouts for those in wheel chairs. It wouldn't be a reasonable defence.

So whst do you say to the other students?

Sorry guys we are having to cut the class size by one from now on and those of you already on the course are going to either have to leave or doubble up affecting your ability to learn

I think Gordon Ramsay is more than qualified to know if a dwarf can work in a kitchen or not.

Christ this forum has some real bitter people. A dwarf getting a job?! HOW DARE HE!

I can see the Public Liability case now:
Louis Makepeace claiming damages from Gordon Ramsey after pulling a scalding hot pan of boiled sprouts over himself that he couldn't reach.
