Its released tomorrow (04/09) on PC / PS4 at, I think 17:00

Anyone else hyped?

I've not actually played a dragon quest game, but it looks right up my street. I love a good turn based JRPG, and they are a dying breed.

It's at 20% off on Greenmangaming atm too - I'm tempted but I have just got The Witcher 3 so I'm a bit busy... :p

Well, I got about 5 hours in last night. First impressions are;

The game seams fun! Pretty standard JRPG stuff, but done well. If you love JRPGs, your going to love it, if you hate them, you will hate it. There's not too much craziness going on with the mechanics etc, its not reinventing the wheel, just polishing the existing formula.

I've put on the harder monster setting, as apparently its super easy otherwise. The difficulty is fine like that, I've died twice!

The graphics seam great to me! The towns etc are very well crafted and impressive. The graphics are "cute" and bright which is what I expected and I don't mind that. The game is pretty chill, time just melts away in a warm blanket of JRPG bliss.

The port seams good overall. Options only exist for 30 / 60 fps, but you can set it to what you want in the .ini file. I've set it to 120fps and have had no problems. FPS has been good. I'm running a 4790k with a 980ti @ 1080p. It runs 120fps quite often, it does fall bellow in quite a few places. I was too absorbed in the game to give you any kind of figures, but I hardly noticed when it was dropping. I've not really spent much time trying to mess around with the settings to try and improve it as it feels "fine" and I'd rather just play the game.

Does it support 3440x1440?

I’ve don’t think so no unfortunately.

With regards to the main thread. Got a couple of hours on it last night and very much enjoying it. Just reminds me so much of DQ8 a game I absolutely love. And a great JRPG so far.

Can’t give my full opinion on it just yet as I haven’t played much and I know it’s a 90+ hour game with extras.

Overall the game plays very well. Runs great at 4k 60hz on my 1080Ti without any drops so far.

This ia bit of a strange one for me. I'm about 9 hours in now, and I really can't say whether I'd recommend it or not. It's a bit like that tatty, yet favourite old jumper you own. You know there's better to be had, but you're just too comfortable with it.

A few reviews have said stuff along the lines of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but while it works, it kinda feels old in places. Just because it ain't broke, it doesn't mean you can't spruce it up a bit.

The music during the intro is by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (it tells you on-screen), but when you're in-game, it resorts to sounding like it's from a PS1 FF era game (and while not bad, isn't exactly great either). I also think I've become numb to the b&*%y awful sound effect that happens at the end of a battle (I assume it's a throwback to the preceding games).

Graphics are fine, but I wouldn't say they're impressive (sorry new boy, can't agree). There's an element of polish missing somewhere - maybe it's a lack of post-processing/lighting effects, but it all looks a bit flat.

Then there's you character, who for some reason they thought it best not to record dialogue for. Ok, you name him, but then there's no other customisation, and he's given a moniker that he's referred to anyway, so there's no reason for him being utterly mute. For example it's just plain weird when another character asks you a question, then continues on as if you've replied to them without saying a thing.

And don't talk to me about it being so very, very twee...

I think I'm missing the nostalgia from not playing a Dragon Quest game before, so that could be a big part of it for me. However, after all that, I still kinda like it. It's something you can plug away at without feeling swamped with mechanics (because what's there is so old, it's second nature), so it's actually fairly relaxing to play.

Like I say, it's a strange one.

Ok, 19 hours in, and I'm enjoying it more and more. Despite my moans and groans above, I've reached the point where I really, really like it.

I am tempted to get this, could get this for £21.99. Worth it at this price? Also what would you compare this game to?

Mate at £31.99 on GMG I would grab it if I didn't have the Witcher to get through, for a tenner less it's a steal!

It's a pretty classic jrpg from what I know, if you've ever played one?

If it’s like a normal dragon quest game it will just keep getting better and better as the story progresses.

Looking forward to playing more but due to work 7am-7pm means I normally watch TV for an hour before bed so will likely continue playing next week :).

I'm certainly finding that. The further in I'm getting, the better the story, the locations, and just the game in general.

I originally said I couldn't decide whether I'd recommend it or not, but now I definitely would. It certainly took a while to get to that point, but yeah, I'm really enjoying it now :)

If you like classic JRPGs, you'll probably like it (turned based combat with the typical Attack, Magic, Item, etc list of options), so sorta feels like a SNES RPG transplanted into 3D. I guess others would say it feels like a Dragon Quest game, but I've never played one before. It took a while for it to get its claws into me - it's a bit too bubbly and twee in places, but after sticking with it, it's really grown on me and I'm now 26 hours in - not bad since it hasn't even been out a week.

With this and Monster Hunter World, I've not had such long and enjoyable gaming sessions in years.

Installing now with thanks to Spacedeck!

I love all the FF games so I am sure I will love this. I am waiting for monster hunter world to be cheap, it looks like the sort of game I would play for an hour then never touch again.

If you like your JRPGs hard (or not easy) then I would recommend turning on the "stronger monsters" setting. You can only turn it on when you first start the game by pressing triangle when entering your name, you can turn it off pretty much anytime if you don't like it, but you can never turn it on mid game.
