Any love for the Jimny here?

Don't forget that these are only part-time 4WD, too – so you can only drive them on the road in RWD form. Otherwise, you can only use 4WD on rough or slippy surfaces (mud/snow/etc.).

Interested in getting one myself, although I must admit that its miserly NCAP performance has tainted my enthusiasm a little – particularly given the ever-decreasing standard of driving on UK roads. Quite a bit of passenger cell deformation and steering wheel intrusion/airbag ineffectiveness. Not too hot.

Not bad for what it is, on reflection, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be better.

How’s the Dodge Charger’s NCAP? :p

Actually about to sell ours, but we've had a few years of fun in it. If you get them - they are brilliant, but always review badly as the general criteria people mark them against they don't do so well on! That said I have loved owning ours and doing an odd bit of greenlaning in it :)

About a week after I got it ...

Haha - the trailer was longer than the car! For such a tiny little engine it towed surprisingly well!

Totally fine.

:D

I think that was after 100mph straight into a wall, mind... Anyway, Charger's long gone – replaced by something slightly more modern!

As I was discussing elsewhere, though, I choose (in part due to affordability reasons) to buy and run older cars – so the lack of safety, in some cases, is an accepted risk. If I were buying a new car, though, it would perhaps be more of a consideration (or essential, if it were being recommended for people with families and the like).

The fact the Jimny didn't perform well doesn't necessarily put me off (it was unlikely to ever excel) but it does give me pause for thought and I am disappointed that it didn't fare better.

Let's be honest, these little bundles of awesome are going to absolutely fly off the shelves. 30% of the buyers will ask things like "why do the front wheels break traction before the rears in the mud?" and the remaining 70% will ask "whats's the lever next to the gear lever for?". But omg so cuuuuteeeee, look at it next to the London bus, it's so itty bitty!

And they'll never see more than a coarse parking lot. Great for the used market though.

indeed, supposedly the grand vitara had the same issue so they changed it to a dial, but i mean what's hard about a lever that you just leave in the 2wd position until you actually need it? which unless you're into off roading or a farmer will be almost never.

Drove one of these on a 4x4 "experience" in Rhodes last year. Was great in all honesty. Most likely has better off road capability than 90 percent of SUVs on the market today.

Please tell me its a turbo manual...... Pleeeeeeease :p

No – it is a factory UK twin but it's an automatic; I couldn't really afford a good factory 6MT car (nor justify the premium), as they're all getting on for mad money now. They're also few and far between, haha; only seen three UK manuals for sale in the past seven months or so.

On reflection, though, it turned out to be a good move – besides being more affordable, it's also far more usable because the V160/V161 manual isn't supported any more. If you chip a tooth or wreck a synchro, then you're forced to pay obscene money for the remaining NOS parts required for a rebuild. That's why you see used transmissions alone selling for £4k and up, if not more.

Pleasingly, it also drives better than the oft-baulky manual ones I've been in. The automatic transmission is a great match for the Supra, which is definitely more of a GT, and you also don't loose boost between gears – in the real world, it'd probably out-drag a factory manual. Good sharp shifts, stout lock-up and a manual mode if you want it. :)
