(Another is to pursue policies that encourage the breaking up of families so that people become individuals and therefore unable to support one another in a non-cash way)

Most couples that break up end up costing the economy more money, the woman is suddenly eligible for
Working tax credits
Child tax credit
reduced council tax
reduced rent
That is of course assuming that she doesn't work full time (which most don't in these cases, they end up becoming pretty much full time stay at home mums)
of the 3 or 4 women I know that are single mums only one works full time, and that was the case before she split with her husband.
