The wife of a former state banker is the first target for the UK's new Unexplained Wealth Order anti-corruption law. She managed to splurge £16m in Harrods over a decade. She also bought a house close to her favourite shop and a golf course in Berkshire.
Getting her to explain how she came by the huge sums of money sounds perfectly reasonable to me, it is time this country stopped acting as a piggy-bank for people who rip off their home country.

Of course it is always possible that she is very lucky on the gee-gees or plays golf REALLY well but she will have no difficulty proving either explanation.

For folks who did invest in bitcoin, or perhaps not directly invest, those who mined a load of coins years ago, then flogged them off as the bubble rose, do they have a special relationship with HMRC, for repatriation of funds, is it classed as since year business profits?
Or was there a one off fee arranged, or did most dander past, and just hop under the radar hoping not to be caught?

Most likely classed as a capital gain.

It's pretty clear where she got all the money from, hopefully they seize her assets and don't give them back.

Genuine question and I must be missing something......where do you believe she got the money from?

Can she sell up and leave the country? I probably would.
You mean can she sell her £15 million house near her favourite shop and her £10 million golf course? Something might turn up in a purchaser's Solicitor's "searches".
However, I guess that she can always flee the country in her £15 million private jet.

No one asked too many questions when she bought them...

Lol it is about time they started to crack down on these people.

Who are the couple at the centre of this first action?
Jahangir Hajiyev is the former chairman of the International Bank of Azerbaijan.

He was jailed in 2016 for 15 years after being convicted of being part of a major fraud and embezzlement that saw tens of millions of pounds disappear from the bank. Judges also ordered him to repay $39m.

Seven years earlier, a company based in the British Virgin Islands paid £11.5m for a large home, just minutes' walk from Harrods in west London. Its current market value is estimated at £15m.

They'll only go after the low hanging fruit anyhow - those that don't have any ability to retaliate in some form or fashion :s

Jesus who cares how she got her money. She's spending it isn't she? At least that's better than coming here, working and then sending it all home. Also if her "assets" get seized who gets the money? The authorities do and where does it go from there? No one knows....
