Did you know what you can't do sitting down...?

I recently attended a short course run by a medical claims analyst at which he was explaining some of the myths that exist around what causes accidents. Most were obvious but there were a couple of odd ones that he spoke about.

Firstly, I didn't know that more than 75% of drivers don't actually witness a collision they are involved in because they close their eyes when it becomes apparent what is about to happen. Also, around 20% of people have a vividly accurate premonition of a crash in the five seconds before contact takes place.

Maybe they're obvious but the one that gave us a giggle is that whilst many people commonly suffer flight-or-fright anxiety when in accidents, do you know that is the only occasion where a sober male (females are different, obviously!) can urinate involuntarily whilst sitting down?

Basically, if you're sober and sitting down, however desperate you are for a wee, you won't do it involuntarily because the body won't allow it. Contrary to popular belief, you can't wet yourself whilst driving or sitting in a car, etc!

So next time someone shouts "stop the car/coach!!" ... don't worry, you really don't need to!

ermm I disagree. I got a coach to Wembley last year and the driver wouldn't let me out or stop the coach.. Even as we approached the car park.. I pee'd in my Costa cup sitting down. Ironically, buying the large coffee was my saviour.

But that was a voluntary 'release', surely?

Yep costa has saved me once before too on a coach trip. Never had such a SOB as a driver like that before.

Maybe maybe not but its ****** uncomfortable. I was in a minibus once with no opportunity to stop for several hours and dying to go but never did involuntarily - not sure I want to test the theory though.

EDIT: Actually there was more than one instance at school where someone (male) wet themselves while sitting on a chair due to either being too afraid to ask to go to the toilet or the teacher being a dick.

Surely just common sense dictates that that is BS

So men apparently sometimes pee themselves in accidents?

You've then got this handwaving claim that it is somehow (as if by magic) only possible during an accident? Why? That makes no sense.

Why not in some other scenario? Why not a rollercoaster for example? The involuntary reaction from your body is responding to stimulus, you could be frightened etc.. or stimulated in a similar way by some means other than an accident. Or indeed you might simply not be able to hold it in any longer.

I remember when I was a kid I laughed too much at a joke that some pee came out... I wasn't in a car accident at the time.

Complete rubbish.

i know of plenty of incidents where a truck driver hadn’t been able to hold it in any longer resulting in a wet seat.....

F1 drivers just go in their suit during races also.

One thing you certainly can do whilst sitting down is type a thread that’s full of crap! :p

With the greatest respect, isn't the point that the theory suggests 'involuntary' release? I'm sure anyone can "let go" if they feel they don't want to suffer the discomfort any more. What the analyst was saying was that men won't wet themselves if they don't want to.

Racing drivers and pilots fall into the same category. Kids don't count.

It isn't a "theory" it is a nonsense anecdote someone told you.

Fair point.

Anyway, you can certainly involuntarily wee whilst sitting down, it’s called Urinary incontinence.
