Road Cycling

Maretastic this morning, swapping all my tyres over for tomorrow's racing, well that wasn't but then I decided to redo bar tape and then mess around with my brakes and managed to pop a seal and get fluid everywhere so now my rotors and pads are in the diswasher trying to get them cleaned up as a temp measure until some new ones arrive. Will be following that up with some light sanding... Borrwing a rotor tomorrow as couldn't find a 140mm local to me in stock! Stupid expensive new wheels you forget all the other bits.

UTmaniac, I swear you think we live in Sweden not the South Coast. Think I could count the number of times on one hand that I haven't headed out due to ice down here and even then I usually jump on the mtb.

Eugh, tyres, pads (lots of and spares) rotors all ordered! Expensive enough and I've not even got a cassette for it!

Anyone know what valve extenders fit on Vitoria rally’s with the none removable core?

Zip fit, but then they don’t work with Lezyne track pumps....

And Corsa CX have removable cores so the extensions I use for those won’t fit....

And yes I flatted a tubular out on the road. I had a rally spare which I put on and could use my mini pump with, but not being able to use track pump at home would be a pain. Going to fit a rally as they are super cheap and just ride it until my warranty frame arrives.

Went out Sunday morning. Cold but lovely once suitably wrapped up. Had to take a detour due to roadworks and got caught by a train of 7 guys who were zipping along. The last guy invited me to join on, so I managed to grab the wheels. Even at the back I was working pretty hard to keep up, but managed to find out they were related to the Pro Vision clothing company / team. I was enjoying the tow on roads I know but my front tyre seemed to be getting softer from the way it was riding on rough surfaces (thumping along poor surfaces, never mind potholes). The final straw was one sweeping bend where I thought I was going to under-steer into the hedge or end up on the deck, so I dropped off the back to pull over and sort the tube.

At that point I realised my saddle pack with pump and tubes was on the other bike :mad::mad::rolleyes: Complete schoolboy moment.

Decided heading further from home wasn't the best idea, so turned round and started to see how far I could get before the tube went pop. Got back to the next village which Mrs Chris could find if I rang & begged enough for lift but spotted a cyclist stopped. The very kind lady earned many cycling karma points by lending me her pump

Ordered a new saddle bag and bits to fill it with from Wiggle last night - more tubes, multi-tool and an extra pump. Managed to find the same pump I'd borrowed - it seemed pretty good and only £8.

I have published a heap of new posts all linked onto the one subject of nutrition on my blog -

https://dcun.co.uk/nutrition-weight/

Use that as basis and it links off to seperate posts on meals through the day.
It's specific to me and what I am doing rather than a general overview but hope it provides useful/interesting to some extent for you guys?

@merlin - this is what I do to be so lean! :p

Rapha Winter as above, then Deep Winter for anything below usually with something on underneath and I have some cheap lobster types for if I'm just riding to work and it's bloody cold and windy as they do the best of keeping my hands going first thing in the morning.

Rapha Deep Winter at 12C for me!:( Below that I struggle through with either Castelli Estremos or Rapha DW with a liner. Still searching for a better glove.

Latest purchase was some Kalf ZERO gloves which were useless at 12C let alone 0C.

A lot of winter gloves have this rubbish design where the internal lining pulls away with sweaty fingers and you can't get them to align again.

My old but still in good condition SealSkinz suffer from the liner not being fixed.

If you've got money to burn, Dissent133 look like a good concept:

Haha. I only go out to enjoy it. Freezing cold days are a struggle to go out on now I can do indoor training

Some reading for later in the week - thanks! :D

What winter gloves do people use? I think ideally I need some that are windproof as that's when my hands tend to freeze most!
My go to are currently Sportful Sotto Zero. Great gloves but I should've gone for the Sportful Fiandre as being more waterproof would probably give them some more wind protection. The couple of rides in -10 I did 2 winters ago in the Sotto my thumbs froze from the windchill. They're fine for down to -5 or so. Wore them saturday morning just gone and they where perfect, slightly warm on the run back in when stopping/slow and the sun out, but perfect on the ride out into the wind. So that was starting at -2 on the way out into around a 0 degrees headwind. Then the run back in was up to maybe 5-6 degrees.

Hate that! My Galibier Barrier are like that and really puts me off using them as they're not the most comfortable gloves anyway, then as soon as the liner is even slightly damp (rain/sweat) it bunches up being a [pain to get on and also getting more uncomfortable as I ride. I've got quite short fingers but find a couple of my finger tips jammed in the ends causing the fingers to feel 'tight' and restricting their movement. Can't complain about the price of them though, much better than the DHB/Aldi alternatives I've used (which both suffer from the same problem).

I think.......if you can’t find gloves that can keep your hands warm it may be too cold to ride!!!
Think xdcx pretty much summed that up! ;)

For me, the cold doesn't really put me off. Driving, heavy rain does. Couple that with freezing cold and I'd then side with you! Not paying a Zwift sub for nothing! ;)

Same. Not a chance I'm going out when there's ice on the roads or the rain is horizontal. Anything else is fair game.

Ditto, nothing fun about riding outside in winter when chilled to the bone :o

I pretty much retire to the trainer from October and don't really mind it. If the weekend weather is nice I'll get outside provided it's dry but otherwise I quite enjoy being indoors and catching up on media.

These guys?

Seem to be hard to find online, i have about 8 of the 100mm ones in the shop I think.

The whole valve stem spins off and you thread a longer one on. Certainly on vittorias I've used with the red non removable valve core ones.

I got some lifeline ones from wiggle, not sure they are going to be long enough but they were £4.

Worst case it’s a drive up to Merlin on the weekend if the weather is good, if not I’ll wait another week and keep riding the trainer.

Need a handlebar adjustment or new tape as putting too much weight on the ulnar nerve I think.
