Humans

Individuals not accepting responsibility is the problem.

Markets/politicians respond to the consumers/voters. Blaming heavy industry, plastic producers and meat industry and then shrugging your shoulders saying 'what can you do?' is such a cop out.

Plastic pollution laws only really started taking off when the public called for it. All of a sudden it was something the decision makers were talking about. Companies started to use 'plastic free' or 'recyclable' as a selling point.

If there was less demand to have a cut of red meat with every meal at the cheapest possible price, then the industry would get smaller. Politicians would find it easier to clamp down on the industry. You wouldn't have fast food like McDonald's producing burgers that they can put in your hand for 99p and still make profit.

Now, I have a wash bag for my clothes, so that the hundreds of thousands of microfibres do not get washed out into the sea/water system.

If it was made mandatory, that would be a start. However to raise awareness and help people help themselves, here is a link:- http://guppyfriend.com/en/

It is German, which means it actually works :)

Very interesting, but where do the microfibers go?

Sometimes the sacrifice has to be bigger than a person, are you seriously suggesting that your own life and your families life is more important than the actual Earth itself? Somewhat hubristic/Concieted no?
did i say i was or they were? me and mine are totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things, doesn't mean i'd gladly or gleefuly wish for them, or me to meet a barbaric end. you seem quite at peace with such notions. - for clarity i think you're full of hot air and nonsense (to put it politely), spouting an apparent wish list of attrocities to befall innocent people - troll, fantasist, or just plain silly. take your pick.

i like your german wash bag though. was that the reasoning for joining up, to slip that little link in?

lol @ people forgetting we're animals too and every person and animal is inherently selfish. And pretending otherwise is just trying to win kudos with others for your own selfish means.

It is if its at the cost of the environment in which we all live. And extremely counter-productive/stupid.
Thats the whole point isnt it!? Its about how much that 1 life of your child means to you as a human and how much you are willing to keep it alive no matter the future costs. If you had someone say to you, you kids life or this Elephants which are you gonna choose? It seems pretty simple to me. This is the reality of what we are up against when it comes to "saving the planets animals" which is what this thread is all about right?

Why should UK citizens sacrifice more when the rest of the world won't? It's not like the UK punishing itself even more is going to make any difference

If everyone thinks like that we will get no where. Perhaps those who commit early will be the pioneers in the new technology. Besides we will all go together if it all collapses

Why should UK citizens sacrifice more when the rest of the world won't? It's not like the UK punishing itself even more is going to make any difference

Because to these people its a case of:

The sacrifice must be made by others entirely. I forget who made the analogy but; you need more men for war? Here you can have my friends. Need more? Sure, have my brothers! Need more? You can have my sons, too! Need more? I don't have any more men...

Oh I should also add.... Polyester clothes are for cretins/morons.

All my clothes now I buy are 100% cotton, to try and combat the issue of synthetics polluting the environment. Also recently bought some Bjorn Borg underwear which was Hemp, absolutely fantastic, even better than synthetics!!

Might want to re-consider that

Cotton, which is the most used fibre in textiles produced in the EU and totals 43% of all clothing sold, might not sound like an extreme polluter in the way coal or oil is. However, the production process includes pesticides used in cotton farming, toxic dyes in manufacturing - and the huge amount of natural resources used, like water, is causing significant shortages.

In an experiment in the documentary, Stacey is told that it can take over 15,000 litres of water to grow the cotton to make a pair of jeans. “I’ve never associated clothes production with pollution before,” she says.

I cant help but see green fibrous y fronts now..... :D

Extinction is in our nature but since we live well beyond our means, unless there's a natural cull, humans fate is sealed. We can't go on taking for granted the speed of population growth without there being a consequence, either to nature, the environment but ultimately, it is us that will loose in the end.
