Need some new reg plates, anyone got recommendations as to suppliers? Want something plain, so no borders or flags, purely just the VRM and very subtle required markings. Potentially metal, bit more durable? No pressed though, none of that for me!

here's the markings on my reg plate. it's tiny

Bought new plates at weekend, good old Halfords. Obviousl 100% legal and their name/postcode in small silver writing on white/yellow meaning you really cannot see it.

i see at least 2-3 really obvious illegal plates every week. as in incorrect spacing. putting spaces where there shouldn't be etc. i don't think any MOT test centre actually bothers. so not having the correct markings wouldn't be a biggy tbh.

Or they just put a standard pair on for the MOT test then swap them back afterwards - a 2 minute job. Illegal spacing drives me insane for some reason.

As above, there's a bloke who lives near my folks with a scooby and his usual plate has no spacings, i've seen him swap them round to a plate with spacing presumably for its MOT.

I do wonder how speed cameras/ANPR works with odd lettering/invalid spacing. Does it have an algorithm to dump out possibilities, and then runs those to see if they're valid or a match.

that is a possibility however i just don't understand why anyone who knows it's illegal would think it's acceptable to do that. i think they just put them on and hope they never get pulled which they won't do unless they do something stupid in front of 10 police officers.

if they are swapping plates then they know for a fact it's wrong. a lot of people are just blind ignorant. i even had a coppers wife tell me i should illegally space the letters on a dateless plate as it would look better. this is on a plate worth around £5K which would then be at risk because if you do get pulled they can confiscate the plate from you if you do stupid stuff like that.

There's a manned police station in my village on a residential street. Parked outside the house next to it is a car with a number plate that is incorrectly spaced, incorrect font & showing an emblem otherwise in accordance to the allowed ones.

It's been like that for at least a year and nothing is done.

Then again I live in South Yorkshire, police here are too busy with people saying bad words on twitter or covering up for asain peado gangs... M

Seems odd to criticise police for spending resources on minor issues like internet trolls, then criticise them for not spending resources on minor issues like checking character font and spacing on someone's number plate. Maybe they have noticed but have decided that as long as it's legible, then it's not really worth pursuing? I'm not a particularly big fan of odd fonts, illegal spacing, etc, but as long as the reg number is clearly legible, then think it's one of those rules where police discretion being applied is preferable to ruthless adherence.

It's an MOT failure.

It's not actually:

0.1 Registration plates
You must check the registration plates on all vehicles except for:

  • unregistered vehicles
  • foreign registered vehicles
  • diplomatic vehicles
  • military vehicles
You don’t need to inspect the following items:

  • the supplier’s name
  • postcode
  • BS number
  • logos or emblems outside the minimum margin around the registration number

No mention of it here either: https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/flags-symbols-and-identifiers

These days though, the police just don't seem to care unless your taking the **** and running something unreadable, or doing something stupid. What's illegal and what's enforced are different things.

I've never been stopped for running my 3/4 size front plate and I live a few 100 meters from a police station. So I pass a cop car pretty much every time I go out. They do stop people for annoyingly loud exhausts though!

2018 Aston Martin Vantage owns the plate that I've wanted for years (first initial and last name). I'll never get that now :(

Because an illegally altered number plate is an actual defined crime.

Calling someone a blithering idiot on the internet is not.

I assume that there's at least 11mm of white plate around the lettering.
