Height of i5 8400 stock cooler

stock heat sinks aren't the best even for normal case's. What about a 120m AIO instead? Would cool much better and still not take up much room.
 
yeah, that's the issue. Lovely case, bit of an issue around CPU cooling.

Decent GPU support, but CPU cooler clearance is limited to 58mm (according to documentation).

Had basically the same issue with the Ryzen setup that's currently in there. The Spire cooler wouldn't fit so I got the 1400 as it came with the Stealth cooler, but that was pretty poor, at least in that case.

Are there any decent coolers that will fit and deal with the 8400?
 
ah yes. the c7, forgot about that one. yes it's better than the l9-i that i linked above.
(but tbh, it's the best out of a bad bunch, you're never going to get good thermals with a tiny cooler)
 
It's also a matter of how are you going to get fresh air to the cooler. There's a bit of air space around the IO, but it's definitely something to consider and plan for.
 
Getting air to it isn't a problem as there is a big vent over the bottom half of the lid. The product page says that it will take a cooler up to 58mm high. Can't you use the C7 or did you send it back?
 
C7 is almost certainly better, but I haven't done any testing to prove that. Only complaint I have with C7 is it's fan cannot be turned over to pull air up and away from motherboard instead of pushing down toward motherboard. In my experience I've found these very low profile cooler get a better supply of cool air pulling than pushing .. probably because when pushing down the air is heated then hits motherboard turning out, then hits RAM/GPU turning up along side of cooler & fan where fan then draws it back in. When fan is mounted to pull up from motherboard the airflow to cooling is over motherboard .. meaning none of it's own heated air is being drawn from around the fan back into fan and then into cooler. Mabye this image will explain it better.

There are adapters available and/or 3D printer programs to make fan mount adapter for C7. Google "cryorig C7 fan adapter" to find them.
 
I used to do that when I had a stock cooler on a Athlon 2000+ way back when I really got into computing.

The C7 should be much better than the stock cooler and Doyll's suggestion of turning the fan over may work well in your case as it will dump the heat through that large vent and out of the case. You could try it with the fan mounted normally and write down the temps of the cpu then turn the fan over and test again to see which is best. Even using cable ties to secure the fan temporarily upsidedown would work.
