Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Here is the difference in latency between my current Virgin media vivid 350 and my previous sky fibre pro.
The difference is obvious and I'm canceling virgin and going back to sky because of that and unstable upload...

And yes my Hub 3.0 is running the latest firmware with the latency "fix"...

Do you game online? If yes, how is the experience?
Before the the .608 firmware I used to have issues with online gaming but now I don't. My area also is not over subscribed and from wifi SSID's I've noticed not many of my neighbours are on Virgin. I have the 350Mb BB. Here is my DSL Report quality and speed test. Before the .608 my BufferBloat used to be 'D'.

Here is my TBQ meter. The 4 peaks are where I've been saturating my upload when uploading stuff.

So just cancelled virgin and reordered sky.
The guy from virgin customer service started laughing when he saw my data usage. Used almost 800GB in about 5 days. He was probably happy to see me go LOL...

What area are you in? ... I doubt this is an area issue seeing as members above are also having similar problems.

Also called VM up this morning and was told again there is an intermitent fault in the area ... interesting that he said he could'nt access any data off my Hub even though it was showing as online. (He was going to replace the hub until he saw the area fault) ... I was told this would be sorted in the next 2 days.

Area 18. Also my upstream channels are at 16qam as that is how my area is at the moment and will be upgraded in the future but no one knows when.
That might be a possible bottleneck..

It's a VM network issue. They prioritise speedtest traffic over streaming services in all areas, some worse than others.

It certainly appears so although I can't complain about download speeds as these were consistent. Even when testing torrents I was maxing out the connection where speed was at ~400mbps all the time.
Can't say I won't miss those download speeds but for me reliability is more important.

I've just submitted a cancellation request. They're still not acknowledging the area fault and I've been paying too much for the connection anyway.

Will see what retentions offer but otherwise it's a switch to some kind of FTTC :/

So the area issue was resolved last week, and retentions team offered me a good deal. Still on VIVID 200 (broadband only) but now at £27pm. Happy with that for now.

Id advice anyone who isn't yet ont he superhub 3.0, to upgrade to one.

I just did so recently (for free) from the superhub 1.0, and its night and day in terms of wifi coverage. Of course if you are majority a user through LAN then it doesnt matter

Still can't compare to proper WiFi hardware. I couldn't get more than 220mbps on my phone with hub 3.0 even when standing right next to it and speed was all over the place each time when testing.
With two UniFi access points I get full speed ~390mbps each and every time anywhere in my flat...

It's a shame you've been suffering with the SH1 for all this time. The wifi in it was shockingly bad. While the SH3 is good in comparison it doesn't really come close to a dedicated router like an Asus AC68U etc or a Ubiquiti setup.

True..
I actually had two AC68U and as great of a routers they are I could not for the life of me set them up together (using mesh network with gigabit ethernet backbone) so that my devices (mostly phones) would roam seamlessly between them without breaking VoIP or video calls. In the end I went with Ubiquiti and I couldn't be more happy...

This picture shows why I need two. The empty space visible is a lift that blocks all of the wireless signals...

I see you understand my pain.it was absolutely abysmal. The router was upstairs and downstairs I was getting download speeds of less than 1mb. Thankfully the wifi coverage around the house is a lot better now.

Im good with the sh3 for now, but in the future i may think about a dedicated router

Hi, ok so I am leaving plusnet and joining virgin media.

I currently have my plusnet modem in my office, which is upstairs.

However because I am joining virgin the router needs to be downstairs with the tv where the cable comes in the house.

can anyone tell me how i could get the modem/router upstairs into my office? I have about 10 ethernet plugs in the office with a network switch. Would a powerline connected to a network switch solve all the problems?

Running an ethernet cable from the modem to the switch will give you the fastest speed.

A powerline will work. I use a TPlink AV2000 and the speeds are decent.

i just ran a 30m cable. had to drill through 2 walls. skirt around a door then under the stairs the up the side of the stairs. had around 5m of cable spare too. so i can go up into the attic at some point if I wanted too.

best to stick the hub into modem only mode and run your own switch/router
