Because it isn't racism.

A person had a traumatic experience and suffered a temporary psychotic break as a result, yes their anger was targeted at black people (though thankfully not acted upon) however once it had subsided and they had recovered they returned to normal, it doesn't make them racist.

The main thing with acting abnormally, is that it's not how you normally act.
 
It's fairly common behaviour for people to irrationally direct their anger at a group of people rather than individuals, we only need to go to Twitter to understand that all white men are guilty of oppression and we should all feel very bad about ourselves. I guess the difference here is that Liam has acknowledged how abhorrent his actions were 40 years ago.

I work in a hospital, the Neeson story was a hot topic of debate today.

In layman's terms, the general consensus is that learning of what happened to his friend caused him to temporarily lose partial touch with reality, (kinda go out of his mind for a bit) his anger/hatred was indeed directed at black men but that doesn't mean he actually hated black men just that his mind was acting in that way while it attempted to process/resolve events. Once he had recovered and returned to acting normally the hatred passed.

Apparently it's actually a LOT more common than you would think, some were saying they hoped this story drew more attention to it (though with the way the tabloids are covering it, it's unlikely to be the kind of attention needed).

What he did was racist. In fact you could not give a clearer example of an act that was racist.

I don't see why his anger changes anything. Being angry doesn't give you a free ride to think and act how you want.

Now i am not saying he is still a racist. I accept that he is regretful about it and knows what he did was wrong. That still doesn't change history. His thoughts and actions, at that time, were racist.

He didn't think or act how he wanted, that's the point, he wasn't in control of himself.

Well he did do something, he went out roaming the streets (apparently in a black area), he also intended to do something else - kill a black person if the situation presented itself, namely being attacked by one.

What he did isn't too different to say some racist cops who decide to pick on black people more because they've had a load of grief recently from black criminals etc... He's not viewed people as individuals but rather has grouped people together and was going to treat members of one group differently because someone else belonging to that group did a bad thing. That is very much a racist thing to do.

Regardless of whether he was in control or not,
what he said, thought and did was still racist.

I'm not disputing whether his anger clouded his judgement or not. It may well have done.

I haven't read loads about it, but didn't he go out looking for a fight with a black man so he could find one to hurt badly in revenge for something another black guy did?

I can see why that seems racist. Why didn't he try and find the actual person who attacked his friend?

What I know of the story sounds to me like he realised his actions were (probably unwittingly at the time) racist once he'd calmed down. No idea why some people think his films should be boycotted now

I believe that Neeson said that he would have felt the same anger if the rapist had been Irish, Scottish, British or Lithuanian - who did he miss out?

Didn't do anything? Which part are you referring to? :)

He actively went out, with a Cosh or whatever it is, looking for someone to start trouble with him (how he went about this I don't know), if said trouble presented itself he probably was going to use said weapon.

However, correct, thought crime is a thing now, you can't be open and honest about things you previously thought without it being shoved back in your face. Better off bottling that sort of thing obviously.

Boycotting because it's the cool thing to do now don't you know. It's why no one see's Johnny Depp films anymo....oh wait, I mean Mel Gibs.....oh wait.
