Bought a car and its shagged.... How should I proceed? Help

Tbh my then 17 year old 55k mile 735i was in very much better condition than that when I bought it and on viewing it indoors under floodlights for about 3 hours it turned out very much better than the photos in the dealers website, by his own admission the dealer had spent a week preparing it and it showed.

That’s had minimal prep at best and I can understand you being unhappy.

But,

What would have had me walking away straight away, never mind viewing in the dark and in the rain (schoolboy error) was the fact it’s come from Africa, given the wonderful (not) roads over there frankly I’m surprised the damage isn’t far worse.

Not to mention I’ve never been a fan of imported cars after some insurance woes with one years back.

Not your finest hour there I’m afraid.

obviously different definition of shagged here! tbh I think you'll have a hard job rejecting the car as almost all of the issues are clear and obvious, and would have been at the time of purchase, a more thorough check should have been done before handing over 20k! Probably worth a good argument with the dealer and see if they will give you anything back and just get the bodywork issues sorted elsewhere

I agree with others, to reject the car it would be "not fit for purpose", and if it is mechanically sound then it is fit for purpose. Almost everything here is cosmetic and can be seen and it is a lesson learn not to buy cars in the dark or in the rain.

Forgive me OP but how can you spend so long looking for the perfect car yet buy so badly?

Write to the supplying dealer with what you would like to do. Lay out what you believe needs to be put right and give them the opportunity to respond.

If you are not satisfied reject the car as it looks crap frankly and there MUST be MANY better ones out there, though I suspect costing more...because they are better and go over them with a fine tooth comb.

I can see why your annoyed, but realistically how much will it cost you to get sorted at a decent body shop? I would just get it sorted myself as I would expect any dealer to do as cheap a job as possible TBH. At least at that point you'll have a great example - an expensive lesson though!

It's not an ex Top Gear car is it? As it looks like it's been dragged through the South African Savannah?

It does look like some damage, especially to the skirts has been badly repaired? Best thing to do is to work with the dealer to see how much they are willing to get corrected but be nice. Wasn't there a post here where cosmetic flaws weren't accepted as a valid reason to reject a car? Thought I recall something along these lines posted before?

btw that car has had a respray .. from looking at those pic's .. that wheel arch has filler .. and that split is it bottom of door or rear bumper ?
get a magnet run it over the arches .. bet it won't stick ..
I would check with Africa see if it's been in a crash .. should be able to fined original licence plate number ..

So I have been on the hunt for a BMW Z4 35is for a few months now, many of you will have seen my posts here. I always take my time looking for cherished examples with good specification.

Very wise when paying out 20k for a motor, but why on earth did you fail so badly and NOT take your own advice?! Hope others take note of this post, this is how not to buy a car.

Very informative, I thank you.

I think he saw the low mileage, 1 owner and assumed everything else is perfect as it came from a “reputable” garage.

Just for clarity it is a UK car that went to Africa with its owner for a year and then came back to the UK.

Additionally I have just been to the dealer and they have agreed to sort everything on the car highlighted. Hopefully this is the end of it and I can enjoy the car next week.

Hey all,

So I have been on the hunt for a BMW Z4 35is for a few months now, many of you will have seen my posts here. I always take my time looking for cherished examples with good specification. I found a lovely car at a near by garage (which has very good reviews) a few days ago, I called in, got further information, looked at their pictures and it looked good.

The car is a 2013 Alpine White BMW Z4 35is, with just 1 owner, 21k miles on the clock and full BMW service history. It has a contrasting coral red interior and lots of extras! The car has come from Africa, with the same 1 owner who moved to the UK. Great I thought, so I went down to the garage which has many positive reviews with the intent to see the car. Unfortunately it was raining and it was dark. I had a a look around the car as best I could with out getting drenched by the rain and it looked good to go.

So I agreed to purchase the car, £20,500 for a mint 35is. During the sale I got told how they only cherry pick the very best cars which inspired confidence given the spec of the car.

Fast forward to 1 day later, it is day time, I have had the car cleaned and I am now noticing issues all over the car, every time I look at it I seem to find something new. I have compiled a quick list of these below.

Issues Noticed:
Front Passenger headlight condensation (Mentioned this one, and he played it off as its an older car)
Exhaust tip corroded and deformed on one side of the car
Side skirt driver side scraped around half way up 2 inches long, deep black mark
Side skirt driver side scraped lower underneath the car, can see the paint hanging off when viewing
Side skirt passenger side scraped also underneath / the side and can see the paint hanging off
Undertray damaged / snapped
Front bumper scraped at the very bottom / underside with more paint hanging off visible
Passenger side glass has scratches all over it
White substance spilt all over the car behind the drivers seat
Scratch marks along the driver side door spanning around 20cm
Both mirrors scratched and marked
Front quarter panel scratched driver side and passenger side
Driver M Sport Entry Panel Loose
The wind deflector is missing???
Glovebox mechanism faulty, does not open properly
TPMS Sensor has shown as "error" on the Idrive twice but gone away

Now my saving grace here I hope is that I purchased the majority of this car via finance, I believe that gives me more power in terms of the direction that this goes.

I am torn here, the car is really nice to drive, and has a beautiful interior, and I really want to keep it. But all these issues above, I am very wary of what to do. I know the garage will offer to "repair" the car, I am guessing they will just try and do this on the cheap and just "touch it in. Should I consider rejecting the car?

I have spoken to the garage that sold the car to me, and have informed him I will be coming in today as I am very unhappy with the condition of the car.

All advice appreciated, what should I do here guys?

Thanks all

this is comedy gold

car from africa - alarm bells. africa doesn't exactly have great roads. neither is it free from corruption, etc. i wouldn't buy any car from there.

6 years old and 20k miles = 3k miles a year = not been properly used and likely to have issues due to long periods of standing still. also why would someone bring it here to then just sell it? if i was going to take a car from 1 side of the world to the other it's something i would likely be keeping for life as it's far cheaper to sell and just re-buy over here.

full service history - from africa i assume? good luck with that. i bet i could forge full history in africa for my car by paying some geezer over there £50.

£20,500 for a 6 year old z4? the most expensive one near me is £19K and is 3 years old the 28i though. £15K gets me a 3.0 2012 so 7 years old. so you paid £5.5K more for 1 year newer and the 35i? likely make no noticeable difference in day to day driving.

i haven't seen the pics but by some of the comments i probably should. also you do realise there is a brand new model just been launched? therefore the price of Z4's should be tanking. yet you overpaid?

why don't you just go and get the car wrapped inside and outside? the light having condensation is normal for a 6 year old car. the sun in africa will have destroyed the seals, etc. that is the other thing. with it being africa being in the hot all the time to now going to a cold climate. it's a dramatic change. i'd expect to see some leaks soon from other seals, etc.

spend £2K on a full interior/exterior wrap.

And when I thought Mal X was the prime source of comedy gold of motors, in pops AlphaMale with this thread. (Really mate, come on, inspecting in the rain in the dark?!)

Is the original advert available still? Does it list these issues?

Reject the car as misrepresented if so (and you can show the advert to the finance company alongside your photos).
