YouTube bans comments on all videos containing anyone under the age of 18.

That's pretty big news. I'm both suprised and not suprised, some of the comments are 100% pure trash but as you said it's one of the main things that brings people back.

I guess if YouTube could effectively cut out just the dangerously predatory comments then they would. If an outright ban is the best they can do to tackle it then I think they morally have little choice.

I can see this running into issues - two vloggers I watch videos of from time to time often feature their family and the comments are a big part of their community.

Now is the time to make a streaming site like Youtube called YouHub, I can imagine they'd make a decent mainstream service like Youtube only better.

Yeh same here, the misses and I watch 2-3 vloggers from time to time all who post family content (which is why we watch). A lot of their interaction with their communities is through the comments section.

They could deal with pretty much all the problems on the site, but it'd involve employing people to do and that'd cut into their massive profits, so they'd rather do things that don't cost them money.

Why did you give the thread a title that is flat wrong about what they are doing? Did you just not read your link?

From that link:

In a blog post, YouTube said its new policy meant videos of very young children would automatically have the comments section disabled.

The move is likely to include videos of toddlers uploaded by parents, as well as short films featuring children by established YouTube stars.

Videos of older children and teenagers will typically not have the comments disabled, unless a specific video is likely to attract predatory attention. That could include, for example, a video of a teenager doing gymnastics.

So... not all videos of people under 18 then?

seems a bit harsh, from the youtubers I follow it also seems disabled comments = no money and less exposure form that video...

Thank ****, hopefully they disable it wholesale.

Youtubers should make a link to a reddit community if it really bothers them to have a conversation about the video, it’s not difficult.

Youtube is 100% profit orientated, advertising revenue is their only concern, they cannot take any risks with negative publicity.
