Hi Guys,

I'm looking at buying an Asrock B450m Pro4 motherboard https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/B450M Pro4/index.asp.

The specs indicate that it has x2 NvME SSD slots, does this mean I can have x2 of these installed and working at the same time, one for OS and one for Storage? SSD's https://www.adata.com/upload/downloadfile/Datasheet_XPG SX8200 Pro_EN_20181017.pdf
Thanks in advance!

- 1 x M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module
- 1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M Key type 2242/2260/2280 M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s) (with Summit Ridge, Raven Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge)

one nvme and one sata 3 m.2 drives

MSI mATX is the same

itx board. dual m.2 nvme slots. one at x4 speed and other at x2

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ocket-am4-mini-itx-motherboard-mb-57h-gi.html

also has better VRM then the above boards and ram support being 2 dim only

Thanks Orbitalwalsh..

So I could then have these two m.2's running or am I still missing the plot?

x1 of ADATA 256GB XPG SX8200 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD, M.2 2280, PCIe, 3D NAND, R/W 3500/1200 MB/s for Operating System

x1 of ADATA 512GB Ultimate SU800 M.2 SSD, M.2 2280, SATA3, 3D NAND, R/W 560/520 MB/s for Storage

Thanks in advance!

you could. you wouldn;t notice much difference between nvme and sata3 just for an OS or gaming drive. Plays its hand in data handling for workload - like lightroom and mass image edits etc .

could just double your NVMe size for a single 512gb drive or larger 1tb Sata 3 m.2 drive

Ok cool. I've also just confirmed with Asrock themselves. I'm just going to go traditional and have one m.2 nvme as boot/os drive and a regular 2.5" ssd for storage.

Thanks again!

You can run 2 x nvme drives on that board. One would need to be in a pcie adapter installed on the second x16 length slot on the board.
The MSI B450 mortar has a second m.2 slot for an nvme drive and wouldn't need an adapter.

In both cases, the second nvme drive will be limited by pcie gen 2 lanes from the chipset, so 20gbps vs 32gbps of the full speed slot. But still faster than sata (6gbps).

check website and msi rep. one is nvme and second is sata 3 . unless they have got website wrong and EU rep with wrong info

I've looked up the board before, and I double checked before posting that info.

from the specs on the site:

AMD® B450 Chipset
  • 4 x SATA 6Gb/s ports1
  • 1 x M.2 slot (M2_2, Key M)1
    • Supports PCIe 2.0 x4 2242/ 2260 /2280 storage devices
AMD® CPU
  • 1 x M.2 slot (M2_1, Key M)*1
    • Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 (AMD® Ryzen 1st and 2nd Generation/ Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics) or PCIe 3.0 x2 (AMD® Athlon™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics)and SATA 6Gb/s 2242/ 2260 /2280 storage devices
  1. PCI_E4 slot will be unavailable when an M.2 SSD is installed in the M2_2 slot.
From the images of the board you can also see that the second slot has the M key slot for an nvme drive.

@pandem0nium nice, didnt check full data sheet - saw raid 1/0 for NVMe :)

That's Cool, no worries. Nvme raid would be cool, I'd like to give that a go.

You can get full speed nvme raid in a SFF with the Asus X470 ITX. But would lose the nice space and extra expansion slots of mATX.

Hopefully with the next gen boards, we'll get gen 3 lanes on the chipset for better storage options.

x570 has better storage :)

you'll also notice asus line up will look a lot like aorus, far cry from z390... pmsl

Oh ok, great stuff. That's good to know. I'll look into replacing my B350 Mortar and 2700X when the new gen is out.

Do you have a connection to the industry to have that info?

I signed AMD NDA last to times around, to busy this time around with kids and 3rd one coming to do zen2/ryzen3*** :)

should also see prices some of the asus gear at distribution is ... some times can make a killing haha

intel too- 22 core should be coming to x299

Hi all I just joined and this is my first post, sorry but.... I am a bit of a dimwit when it comes to stuff like this, and I may have made a rush purchase, I have the same motherboard, and I also have a SSD M2 NVMe (1tb- or 500 MB) in it now as well as an old hard drive 1tb, so I bought a new SSD to put in I read the comments, but I am still confused, do I need an adapter, or will it slot in some place? Thanks.

A second nvme will work fine in the second m.2 slot but the speed will be limited to around 1500MB/s read and write even if you used a faster drive.

It's OK I found it, it's right in the corner of the board, think I will do it tomorrow, when I bought this computer and put it together, I got 1tb of memory and thought that's enough for everything, and right now I have hardly any room left with games.... lol

Ok looking at that board only the top slot supports m.2 nvme and the lower slot only supports a SATA M.2 so if both drives are nvme then you would need to use a PCIe nvme adapter in the lower pciex16 slot.

So you would fit this into the bottom PCIe x16 slot then mount the nvme on it.
