Living next door to ******?

God no, as soon as Gypsys set up a permanent house on some land near by the crime went up, their kids go into the local town and shoplift, things go randomly missing from people's gardens. It's just completely factual that they commit a lot of crime and don't really give a **** about normal people.

Coming from Norfolk/Suffolk you would be hard pressed to live anywhere that isn't within some kind of distance from a camp, I also previously lived within 200 metres of Norfolks largest site. So this is actual real advice.

The truth is 95% of the time you won't know they are there. Every now and then the family's blow up and have huge fueds resulting in mass kick offs. Camp elders will also try and keep problem families off as they don't want regular police visits for obvious reasons.

It is honestly completely dependent on what kind of ****** they are. A proper ***** is actually quite friendly and wont cause havoc where they live so living opposite is the safest to be :p

The village my mother lives in had a large group move in to a site just outside the village, at first everyone was worried but turns out they are very friendly and respectful. The kids once stole from the local cornershop and 4 of the dads came in with them dragging them by the ear and forced them to pay and say sorry. They stay out of the way of the locals and dont cause anyway hassle really so its pot luck really.

Used to be a bit more like that years ago I think - village my gran lived in would have the same passing band of them twice a year and they made no mess and would help out around the village for a bit of cash then move on. My gran was quite friendly with them and would buy clothing material off them - looking back she was probably a bit naive and it was likely "fell off a lorry" stuff.

These days travelers through that village regularly force their way onto the youth hall site and leave it trashed.

Absolutely not and I am sure almost every single respondent to this thread will think similarly.

My village has a site near us and I went to school with a few travellers. I will never forget in year 9 in a Food Design Technology class (what a name), one of my classmates didn't have his trousers - instead some terrible gym shorts.

Teacher - "Tom, where are your short?"
Tom - "the police currently have them as evidence miss"

:p

I’m not quite sure if people aren’t aware or just don’t care, based on the responses, but ‘*****’ is a derogatory term best avoided so I certainly wouldn’t be using it flippantly at work or anywhere really. I’m aware of someone being pulled up on it for using it casually.

Most people just know it from the film Snatch and don’t know any better but, yeah, one to watch your use of....

From my experience of them, I could use far worse words than that.

They're just White Irish people who refuse to get proper jobs and spend their time drinking, fighting and stealing, who cares if it's derogatory.

This really. You can’t expect to live the lifestyle they do and affect normal people’s lives in such a negative manner, without anything derogatory ever being said about you.

Personally, and in principle, I dont really think a small site (6 pitches or so on a council managed site) should be too much of a problem.. Not least because I suspect that, whatever they do elsewhere, Travelers living on an official site would be inclined to try quite hard not to upset their immediate neighbors.
[...]

However, it might make the house hard to sell in the future should I wish to, especially if the site is expanded.

The latter bit is the worry and perhaps where the risk is, I suspect that a small legal site with 6 pitches is absolutely fine and the sort of people who'd been pro active enough to secure a spot there legally would be the sort of people who you'd be happy to have as your neighbours.

It is generally the people who put up illegal pitches on playing fields, parks, industrial sites, super market carparks etc.. that are scumbags and cause a mini crime wave wherever they go.

A larger site can also cause a bit of an uptick in crime... so for example where you have say a larger legal site but over time a few extra caravans arrive on it and set up unofficial pitches and/or some greenbelt land is purchased adjacent to it and an illegal but permanent encampment is created. Granted I don't think they'll cause anywhere near the chaos associated with the roving gangs of criminals complete with dogs, feral kids etc.. who set up temporary illegal encampments, though they're at least moved on fairly quickly. A large site with a mix of legal and illegal pitches and or adjacent purchased land is a bit more of a cluster **** for the council to deal with and can take years to sort out as per Dale Farm etc.. and over that time you perhaps will have issues with crime etc..

Really depends, they can be pretty vile and make peoples lives a misery not to mention the mess they make and the crime but not all like that. Unfortunately once you get a reputation hard to lose it. Personally I would look for somewhere else. A few when I was growing up. Different species of people, like something from hundreds of years ago. I think they're mentally stagnant in the sense that they're stuck in some kind of permanant mental state that they can never move out of as they've keep away from any other influences for so many generations. You just see raw human nature with them which often isn't pretty.

Even if they don't cause problems, or don't expand - if they stay, you will most likely have issues selling your property at a later date because of it just because potential buyers will be going through the same dilemma as you.

depends on what kind of ******

you have showmen, travellers gypsys and just general scum that call themselves travellers

had a workshop with a showmans yard opposite, lovely people who would do anything for anyone, fantastically skilled engineers and fabricators and generally decent people.
