Going on a cruise alone

i think the Scandinavian cruises would be ok for a solo traveller
how long are you thinking of going for
you'd likely meet some people (if you want to) and end up chatting while on the boat
then you can do your own thing in the ports
you could make it work for yourself if you will be comfortable being alone
if that's not a problem go for it

There are a number of people who do cruise on their own, there are often organised meet ups for these people. However expect them to be in the older age bracket, cruising average age is already high as it is. I'm 25 but I would probably go on a cruise by myself but I would make sure I am sat with other people for evening meal though as they would be pretty boring on your own. It's not cheap doing it on your own though, saying that, travelling alone isn't cheap as a whole anyways.

Whats so bad about holidaying alone other than the cost issue, cruise or not.

Sounds good to me so long as other passengers try to talk to me.

Looking mainly at Scandinavian cruises

We did a Norway Fjords cruise a couple years back with P&O and thoroughly enjoyed it. The scenery is amazing. It's a shame that P&O retired the small ship we went on as it went right up into some of the smaller Fjords.

Most, if not all the other people will be there with someone

Not true. There are plenty of single travellers onboard and there are specific trips for people wanting to hang out with others etc.

More than likely your main dinning table will be a others similar to yourself, so plenty of opportunity to make friends there.

Yup, dining is often on larger shared tables. Unless you can get in there early and book a smaller table, although not guaranteed.

Go for it, you'll love it. It won't be hard making friends, people are very friendly on cruise ships.

Nothing really to do with the OPs question, but.I was lucky to be employed by P&O as a musician on 3 of their ships from 1993 to 1999. Canberra, Sea Princess and Oriana. It started off where the office would fly me to somewhere like Singapore or Barbados to meet the ship and take over for a drummer who was taking leave. Eventually though I got my own regular gig on what was a brand new ship in 95, the Oriana, starting with its maiden voyage and first world cruise. Flotilla of boats and quite a fanfare guiding it into Sydney on its maiden world cruise.

Own cabin with tv and en suite shower room/toilet. Tax free since my overall time out of the UK each year was over 6 months (it's probably changed now), free food, maybe 3 hours work a day, constant suntan, med, atlantic and four world cruises, and a different girlfriend almost every turnaround (they loved the entertainers :D) when returning to Southampton to pick up new passengers. Best period off my life, hands down.

You can get cruises for different age groups. Get one that's close to what you want. If you want to party or if you want to chill.

I had an American girlfriend in the very early eighties, who snagged a job as a Blackjack dealer on Carnival Cruise Lines, out of Miami FL.
She called me when I was in New York, staying with a mutual friend, and said, “Go to Eastern, (since defunct), at Kennedy, I’ll leave you a ticket, JFK to Nassau, Miami to JFK, meet me in the Graycliff Hotel, Nassau, and I’ll get you on the ship to the U.S. Virgin Islands, and drop you in Miami, you can fly back to NYC.
I enjoyed my time with her, and strolling around St. Croix and St. John, but at mealtimes, which seemed like all the time, the Yanks never stopped eating, it was like a contest.
I ate with the crew, eggs Benedict at breakfast, and fantastic salads at lunch and dinner, peppers, olives, arugula, radishes, sliced aubergine, which I learned to call egg plant, and courgettes, which were zucchini.
I went on at 10 stone 13 lbs, and got back to Miami at 11 stone 7 lbs, I don’t think that I did bad, but in all honesty, I think that I lost 5 lbs worth of sweat in banging my brains out.

;)
that's what I fear, after speaking to friends, you need to somehow avoid meal-times being the event of the day, which is what all the tv adverts concentrate on too.
but equally become more discriminating about what is genuine high quality cuisine, so worth eating.

... do ships now have full bandwidth wireless internet connections ? (can a satellite connection really deliver that)

There are fast connections on some ships/brands, like enough to stream SD content, but they are VERY expensive as the technology is very expensive.

You can eat so much food you will end up being sick! I found the best compromise was only having two meals, either breakfast or lunch then the evening meal.

Nonsense! I would do the 3 course evening meal then go to the buffet and eat a ton of sushi. I didn't gain weight though because I was still in the gym on the ship and did a **** ton of walking each day exploring.

We did breakfast, 3 course lunch then evening meal for the first two days. On the 3rd I was stuck on the sun bed like a beached whale. :p

I couldn't handle all the food lol

Yep, we always eat and drinks loads, but also do WAY more walking around and exploring than we would do over a work week. We averaged something like 12 miles a day on our last cruise.
