A New Dimension in Luxury Motoring

That brought back some memories.
I had a Granada 2.0i Ghia and then a Granada 2.8i Scorpio after that. Really good cars.

Absolutely this, my old man had an S plate 2.8i GLS and then an X plate 2.8i Ghia, fantastic cars.

He then had two Mk3’s,a C plate 2.8i Ghia and F plate 2.9i Scorpio.

I asked him about them recently, he said the Mk3’s were better in every respect with the exception of presence, in their day the Mk2 could be parked in the Exec car park and hold its own with BMW, Mercedes etc, the hatchback Mk3 couldn’t, despite being a much superior car to the Mk2.

The exec market moved on and very much left Ford and the later hideous Scorpio behind.

I remember when he had his 2.9i Scorpio, it was a toss up between that - loaded to the hilt with standard kit - or a poverty spec e34 520i or higher spec late e28 525i , he chose the Granada and didn’t regret it, once that came up for replacement, it was a bug eyed style Scorpio or an e34 530i, this time he went with the BMW and has stayed “Premium” German ever since.
 
I do agree with that. The MK2 Ghia X was a great looking car.

Yep, we had a 3L Ghia, it was marvellous :)

Such a comfortable car, also it didn't make me and my sister travel sick, which couldn't be said for our previous Vauxhall Viva with vinyl interior :eek:

I had the last Scorpio (Ultima Cosworth 24v) off the production line.

Looks aside (although I think the looks have mellowed over time, and it's not as 'shocking' now as it was when it launched), it was a fantastic car.
 
I used to have a MK2 Granada 2.8i Ghia - it was a lovely car!!

They were known as the poor person's Rolls Royce lol
 
My mates dad had a Scorpio around the same time my dad had a Mercedes 280E and preferred the Scorpio.

To be fair, in the days of the Granada unless you had very deep pockets it was an easy decision, for the money of a bog standard wholly poverty spec BMW or Merc neither of which even had a radio nor aerial as standard equipment never mind electric windows you could have a Mk 3 Granada Scorpio with every bit of kit you could think of - even electric rear seat adjustment never mind front - coupled with a V6 automatic and many did.

I remember at the time of my Dads Granada’s my uncle had an e23 728i , it was manual, steel wheels, wind up windows, no sunroof and bar a nicer engine note the Granada bettered it in every respect for roughly half the price, to spec the BMW as near to the Granada as possible (many of the standard fit items in the Ford weren’t even optional in the e23) the price difference was massive.

An era where value for money mattered more than a badge on the bonnet I think.
 
Ah yes, the good ol' days of actually being able to judge people by their cars. Nowadays anyone can lease a BMW.

Christ I only recently found out that I could afford to lease some ridiculous cars, and comfortably too. Maybe I should for a few years.
