The government tells facebook to stop collecting peoples private data and using it for their own nefarious means. 10 minutes later government asks facebook if the can have access to everyones private data for its own nefarious means. You couldn't make this stuff up.

The Uk does not appear to be a suspected target location at least for the varieties of Pegasus those folks entrapped/fingerprinted.

Seemed an unnecessary admonishment of facebook for introducing end to end encryption (like already on whatsapp),
OK maybe facebook, are just being populist themselves, so maybe it is just a love-in, when,
both parties know the security services have shown they have the means to put backdoors on target phones eg. Kashoggi, or, Chinese mass monitoring (facilitated by Huawei custom firmware?), plus you have to hand-over your password/phone anyway if the police 'thought' evidence was present.

Rather, they should be continuing with legislation to ensure fb have some publisher responsibility for the misuse of personal data(voting issues) and distribution of fake news/diets/innoculations, extreme political views... that's the tougher cookie.

[unfortunately I think Preti like here predecessor Amber, are in their positions for gender balance, rather than ability]
 
Just pushing a special interest at this point, wonder who it is pulling this string (Intelligence services, "ethical hackers", private firms specialising in political engineering...)? Useless cretins in office are ******* tiring me with the blatant self-aggrandisement, gate-keeping and corruption.

You don't have to hand over your details. But you'd be breaking another law if you don't. I guess its a judgement call on whatever you're hiding to balance what decision you make.

I'm not sure of the government opinion on this as I've not read much about it.

But facebook encryption may as well be CIA encryption. Facebook is a big back door itself. It's trying to give a false sense of security. Encryption only works if the person enforcing it can be trusted too.

Why would people trust Facebook encryption when they were handing over millions of peoples details to private companies without any of their users realising it?
 
Yes - Facebook will probaly still harvest the encrypted messages at source for meta-data .. so you'll probbaly get advertising/feed for whatever illicit conversation you're having ... drugs/guns/love-island/extinction-rebellion/female-cabinet-ministers ....?

plus, what's the relevance of the encryption in sharing mode, are they going to encrypt one to many communications on your facebook page.
