Beggers in Leeds

I find offering them a few hours work is illuminating.... There's a foreign looking woman outside W H Smith's most days, and many times she's been seen in the evening loading two trolleys of booze and food into an 18 plate car outside Tesco, driven by a guy who drops her off around 10.00 AM most days. She seems to spend most of the time whilst begging jabbering into a cell phone under her head scarf. Dodgy as hell. Ripe for a citizen's arrest by the rugby lads when they get bored of lifting people's cars into places from which they are inextricable... ;) I'll mention it to them, I suspect they'll find the idea quite appealing.

Some are making more than a lot of people in work and they also spend it on drugs and other crap.

Sensationalized ********. Absolute utter ********.

Now do some of those organised crime rings in London make bank? sure it's possible. But a random dude earning 45k from handouts loooooool. No.

These types of stories always remind me of retards who write at these crap rag papers claiming x benefit claimant went on lavish holidays and bought gucci handbags.

I was on benefits for 6 months. Those stories are flat out lies. It is impossible. I could sit down and do the maths to debunk half these **** stories. And the media wonder why everyone now just calls them fake news.

They should make it illegal to beg like in some countries.

Sounds like a plan, but unfortunately, as most of us are aware, legislators can make any amount of laws that they like, but if the police won’t enforce those laws, what’s next, make more laws?

Im not sure what relevance being on benefits has here? For someone earning that sum of money benefits are likely a negligible part of applicable at all.

It certainly is possible in a big city like London, for example beggars on trains seem to get at donation from at least one person in the carriage more times than not and they’re into the next carriage by the time they get to the next station.

Similarly a prime spot near a tourist area, on a bridge or outside a station could earn a decent wedge. Not to mention it is cash in hand/unlikely to be declared.

Plenty perhaps don’t bother, they might well earn that sort of amount or even more pro rata relative to a 9-5 but only actually do it for enough time to get the amount of money they need that day. Thus only need to ‘work’ a few hours a day.

The option is there though given the right location or putting in the time on trains, it isn’t just Eastern European gangs - they certainly have regular pitches but there are plenty of prolific British beggars too in specific parts of central London and on certain train lines.

Five days a week all year around is around 260 days worth of begging.

To get 45k a year (no tax being paid) you would need to receive a bit over £173 a day...

Given that one beggar in Manchester had over £500 on him when arrested having been arrested before I'm not sure that 45k a year is outlandish if you have a good spot and a well accomplished routine...

If you beg for 10 hours a day that's only £17.30 an hour or a bit under 29p a minute, on average, you would need begging to receive 45k per annum.

I'm pretty sure a beggar could average a pound every three minutes or so begging.

This beggars belief but some places are contemplating use of clamps for the homeless.

Some official report. said:
The clamps will be bolted on to any homeless person found motionless or asleep after 9pm at night. This is the time when they start accumulating in doors ways. The clamps ensure that any drunk causing a blockage are forced to stay put when they wake up. They have probably been sick too. They are then to be prosecuted and punished.

Eh? What "official report" is that from?

If you're going to quote something then why not provide a link too? Especially with something as controversial as that! I'd be very surprised if anyone in an official capacity went around clamping rough sleepers.

(I'd also note that the thread is about begging not rough sleeping - people seem to continually conflate the two issues)

I was in Glasgow a few years back and had an early morning meeting. I decided to walk as it was only a mile from the hotel.

I saw a minibus dropping off beggars pretty much every 50m down one of the main streets.

Clearly organised and obviously a scam.

Good memory!

I can't believe that got past everyone though! ;)

The lack of empathy displayed on this forum astonishes me sometimes.
Every time you say something like that, we should remember the thread a few years ago where you basically said something like immigrants should all be welcomed and given places to live.

And everybody said to you, "Why don't you open your doors and take one in." And you were like, "Nah thanks, I don't want to."

It's always something that somebody else should do with you lot isn't it. Everybody else should be empathetic, and give money, and give places to live, and... just so long as it's nothing you personally have to do :D

It's funny to watch all the faux outrage from people who are only just outraged enough to post on the internet, but nothing else.

Hmmm this really does't make sense. Working class people vote labour and rich people vote tory, all the people on this forum are rich so they must all vote tory right?

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politic...06/13/how-britain-voted-2017-general-election

Hmmm skilled working class vote more for tory and the middle class vote more for labour? Hmmm how can I possibly square this circle.

While there are definitely some closet Tories I get the impression increasingly over the last few years with the better off posters more and more are finding themselves to be politically in the wilderness - disenchanted with the Tories (for various reasons but only the most heartless would be unaffected by the increased social issues of friends and family even if they are well off themselves) but wouldn't and couldn't countenance Labour and don't really find Lib Dems credible.

As to the last bit of your post I suspect a good bit of that is skewed by working class buying into the shallow promises of the Tories and bored middle class doing the champagne socialist thing, etc.

I was taking the **** out of greebos assertion that this forum is ‘very far right’ when all recent polls on this forum suggest otherwise. And the exit poll at the 2017 election was 2:1 labour:Tory so I think plenty of people on this forum can face voting labour because they have done.

Anything right of Corbyn is 'far right' to most of the speakers corner dwellers :D

Im not sure about other cities but it seems in the past 5-10 years the amount of beggers in the city center has at least doubled.

As it is illegal to beg, does this means anyone can perform a citizens arrest on these people?

I offered one a sandwich once and he didnt want it! Clearly after money for drink and or drugs only. These are clearly not ‘homeless’ or are only homeless by choice

Hilarious. There was a guy I used to see in Leeds all the time, around the Parkinson Library. I bought him a sausage roll once and he said, "no thanks, I'm vegetarian." I thought, fair enough, but that's the last time I buy you anything.

Obviously I had to consume the sausage roll.

This, some people get a culture shock when they step outside of SC and their lefty bubble. And think this is right-leaning forum when in fact it's pretty centrist

yeah theres quite a lot around leeds these days.
Some are regulars, some are clearly professionals, quite a lot are drunks/addicts.
