why are people buying water, just buy containers and fill up with tap water.
Some regions in the UK have abnormally low levels of fluoride in the water supply, because of this it gets added by the water companies in those areas to bring it up to natural levels to ensure the drinking water is as good for people as can be. In addition some areas included low levels of chlorination to kill bacteria and ensure it was safe to drink. As a result of this mineral water companies started running disinformation campaigns years ago to try and convince people the tap water was bad for them because it contained "poisons" like fluoride and chlorine, which is understandable from a business POV because not many people would buy mineral water when they already paid for a mains supply of higher quality H2O.

It worked a treat and a scarily large amount of people fell for it, hell to this day there are still people who genuinely believe not just that fluoride in tap water is bad for you but that it's added to the whole UK supply and not just the few areas where the natural level is low (even funnier they don't even realise most mineral water has levels of fluoride too).

I remember when it came out that Coke's fancy bottled water was just tap water from their bottling plant run through an extra filter or something.

I don't know if they even filtered it, IIRC it was London tap water even! :D

On the wider topic - this is relevant:

The only time there is going to be food shortages is if idiots start stocking up and temporily increasing demand. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

There won't be any food shortages under any circumstances.

I wonder how some people on the forum would have acted in both world wars. The level of hysteria around Brexit is amazing, especially when as a country we've had hostile history with most of the countries around us, yet everyone was watered and fed.

how do you know that? and why is the government writing secret mitigation plans?

They'd have surrendered when the Germans dropped the first bomb over here.

Are they? Last time I heard they were doing nothing.

In world war 1 and 2 we were mostly surrounded by hostile countries. Where do you think we got our food from then?

I think even if Brexit happened not being at physical war is a better situation ;)

We had food rationing for 14 years. It ended 9 years after the war ended. I have no idea what point you're trying to make. Is it "don't worry lads we'll only have a few years of rationing because we're not at war this time"?

EDIT: And the argument that we'll only have food shortages because of idiots going out and causing panic doesn't matter. If there's food shortages directly due to Brexit, or indirectly via people panicking - it still wouldn't have happened had we remained in the EU. Morons gonna moron, and the government needs to work against that as much as they work to stop food shortages directly. They're currently doing neither apart from lounging around in Parliament.

and the way food is supplied now as opposed to ww1 and 2 is completely different, we were a lot more self sufficient and not relying so much on imports and continental road haulage

Something that seems to elude some pro-leave is the level at which things have changed, without the ability to just reset the clock, over the last 40 years ago - we made many fundamental changes among that the sunset of the British empire (which partly was a supply of food products in place of imports).

In previous world wars we had far more developed farming infrastructure in the country with crop cycles, etc. already in effect - a lot of that infrastructure and skills base has been lost in the last few decades and will take time, lots of it, to be able to come even close to filling the gap. During WW2 the country made do with a lot of not great quality foods - stuff like Spam was imported from the US in bulk... so you are basically advocating for changing our diet for an inferior one and resurrecting the imperialist days and everything that goes along with that (as in building up our armed forces, multiple carrier fleets, etc. and bullying countries into a favourable deal for us, etc. which in this day and age would probably result in conflict with the US).
