Cruise Control...

If I go on a long journey, it won't be in my wife's car that doesn't have cruise control. Even if I have to fiddle with the cruise control stick to increase or decrease by the occasional mph, it is still significantly less laborious that adjusting the right pedal. It is perfect in average stretches too - I always overtake everyone because I just whack it on near the upper limit and leave it do its thing. I don't use the speed limiter much anymore, but I used to find that useful, arguably more useful and flexible in traffic.

I use my cruise all the time, even on short roads.

my commute is town, Motorway/dually and city driving (in that order and reverse), I've been using it more lately on shorter roads to try and keep mpg up, it does a better job keeping a constant speed than my foot especially when you're driving over rough bumpy surfaces.

I do quite a lot of motorway miles and always use cruise. I went on holiday and the car I was driving didn't have cruise and my foot was in pain by being stationary for like 2 hours!

I find my MPG is always better than me controlling the throttle, where cruise keeps things smooth, my foot can't stay in a constant position especially over bumpy road, tl;dr cruise does better than my feet.

I can't stand people who don't /can't use cruise control - theres nothing more annoying on a long journey than having a car in front you thats constantly causing you to break as they creep down to 60 or someone that keeps overtaking you only to pull in and drop back to 65

Sounds like that system made to make life easier for you is causing you more stress than just driving on the pedal. Maybe you just need to use it better? Why are you having to brake on the motorway because of someone creeping down anyway. Sounds like your basic motorway driving skills need brushing up before you even start using cruise control.

I can't stand people who can't anticipate whats going on past the end of their bonnet, and doing things like braking for no reason.

MPG won't be up using cruise, quite the opposite.

I find this with my car. Unless it's on a long downhill stretch, it'll never use cylinder deactivation under CC, whereas with me controlling it, it will. That said, I think I used it twice on the way down to Nottingham from Newcastle and that was simply due to average speed on a quiet stretch. Didn't bother at all on the way back. You can't control any cruising in solid traffic.:D

That’s bizzare. My car will use cylinder deactivation depending on the engine demand, regardless of whether the input is me or cruise control.

That's my experience also. I mean, if I'm not on cruise, I'll perhaps drive a bit faster some of the time, but then again, cruise can't anticipate hills for example. And I find it will leave more throttle on going downhill than I would for example. Driving by foot I can usually better the cruise mpg by a few points. But then again, I generally don't care, as I have a much more relaxed drive when using it.

I don't have a new car so the cruise control on my car (08 Golf GTI) is probably very primitive but I like to use cruise control on long sections of motorway especially those with average speed checks

lol - ok. Should have said 'deactivate cruise' (and spelt brake the right way )

yes until they have (predictive)eco-cruise-control/ecc using gps road profile, cruise control/cc is less economic on an open undulating road, below suggests a possible 5% mpg increase.
Fuel Economy Impacts of Manual, Conventional Cruise Control, and Predictive Eco-Cruise Control Driving

cc loss is through not lifting off the throttle on the crest, and uneven throttle on ascent, which a good driver could anticipate.

..if on a busy road , when aren't you ?, you instinctually control speed for minimal hassle, arriving when the overtake gap is there etc. too.
