Fireman Sams been Fired!!

Fire service lacking in women?

How strange.

HR departments overwhelmingly dominated by women?

Hmm.

What's in the low physical activity and clean environment of an HR office that is so attractive to women and how can the Fire Service incorporate this to improve female applicant numbers.

Hang on lets sack the mascot, maybe that'll work.

There is a reason there arent make female firemen. You need to be able run with an average sized man over your shoulder :p

No amount of "gender neutral" crap is going to change that.

Take the military approach and have a lower physical standard for women.

Obvious downside that you're guaranteeing lower physical standards and enforcing double standards on different people in the same role but if you're desperate and know for a fact that women are applying...

I have to say that I find this very silly.

My son is 2.5 and he loves fireman Sam, and for a period of time Penny (a firefighter on the show) was his favourite character. My niece is 3 and her favourite character is Penny, so clearly it's not putting girls off the programme!

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to relate to Freddy and Filbert (both boys names by the way) more?

This was my thoughts. Yes, there will be women who can do this role, but what percentage of the firefighters in the UK are female?

Sick of the **** that surrounds all of this tbh. Men and women choose different roles based on their own personal interests or desires. No quota or mascot will ever change it.

Agreed.. and making thing more of an issue only invites people to have their own opinions and ideas that weren't necessarily there before. The same can be said about racism, homophobia, sexism etc. The comes a point that rasining awareness actually fuels the problem they are trying to resolve in the first place. It's like they are trying to fix all these problems over night but in al lhonesty, it will take the evoluation of generations to water down these problems..

It must be mighty tiring for people being offended and outraged about everything on the basis of everything being an injustice to some group that in most cases, probably don't even care about it in the first place

yerp - I recall a member writing here stating quite truly that there are too many people trying to be offended on the behalf of others..

It's almost certain that there's only 5.3% women firefighters because... And get this because it's gonna BLOW your minds!!!... Only 5.3% WANT to be firefighter.

Reminds me of that absolute wreck on dragon's den where two women pitched an idea to have more women in the construction industry. Even good old Debs had words to say to them.

I agree that we need to be inclusive but there is already a huge pool of job roles that both sexes participate in. It's just that fire-fighting requires you to be a big and bulky person to carry people down ladders etc and guys in general have a bigger frame than girls. The same goes with front line military, having to carry dead bodies, and also builders having to carry huge sacks of sand. Bob the Builder.

When I read OP's post I thought it was satire. It seems its a true story.

It seems par of the course these days to go around picking on anything.
