Misgendering? Sam Smith is now they or them, not he or him?!

Because he's failing to identify as either male or female and I don't agree with that viewpoint so I don't particularly feel like I want to listen to his music anymore.

You don't agree that someone can't identify as being male or female?

Hmmm...this is interesting. A quick look at the history of using "they" as a singular pronoun yields some mixed results with different sources using different texts. Wycliffe's bible, Canterbury Tales...both are mentioned, but are they actually in the original text or have they been changed rather more recently? For example, I place more trust in the Gutenberg project than Wikipedia. The latter has singular "they" in the Pardoner's Prologue of the Canterbury Tales, the former does not.

I think I'll go with the OED as a reliable source. It traces singular "they" to 1375 (still predating modern English entirely!) and speculates that it was in use before then because it was written without comment or explanation, which implies that it was already common enough usage to not require one. Singular "they" has certainly been used quite extensively for centuries, including by extremely respected writers. Shakespeare, for example.

Some people can't grasp things unless they've personally dealt with said subject. It just doesn't compute with them

"I don't understand"
"I don't think like that"
"No one I know thinks like that"

I have zero tolerance for this kind of stuff.

Utter BS. We’re all different but don’t start changing the language because you’re issues are deemed so important that you can’t cope with it any other way
How is it changing the language? Have you never refered to anybody as 'they'?

So tell me what is wrong with that.... oh wait i forgot your not allowed to have an opinion unless its the same as yours these days.

Normal people don't ask what someone's "pronoun" is, I wouldn't. They will assume he is a man, because he is a man. If they get offended then they can be offended.

Suggesting we make not indulging in someone else's fantasy world a criminal matter is just ridiculous though.

100% this tbh.

No. You have a willy, you're a man, you have a vagina, you're a woman. It doesn't get more simple than that. There is no in-between.

Whilst I agree, seemingly there is an interim state whereby a man who wants to be a woman, feels the need to dress as a woman whilst waiting for aforementioned appendage to be removed.

There's not a scientific state. There's a "the world is mean" state. Let's but we confuse the two.

A dude missing an eye isn't a cyclops, and a dude missing a **** isn't a woman :p

Most people have to be programmed to believe that, because it isn't a conclusion that you would reach through experience and observation.

Which is why there is so much time and money being spent on "reeducating" us - esp kids :( :( They will grow up believing that a man isn't a man if he says he's a woman. Or a kitsune. Or an attack helicopter.
