Why does every phone other than the iPhone come with android?

The worst thing about mrochester having a closed mind about this, is that he's totally blinded by the fact pretty much everyone would happily have more competitive market and more choice, however we think that should apply to all companies, only mrochester believes this shouldn't ever apply to apple.

We aren't blinded here. We would welcome more choice and more mobile os. I'd welcome the ability for Samsung to see what they could do to improve iOS but hold on, they can't. Because apple killed that.

Android is the one killing competition?

Can I buy a well made apple phone with android? Nope, why? Because of apple.

Can I buy an HTC with iOS? Nope. Why? Because of apple.

Exactly. If Google wanted to they could say only we can use android. Over night almost every phone manufacturer dies.

Look at haiwei and the issue they have with Jo access to Google apps. Sales dived to the floor.

Google says only us can use android won't result in competition, it'll kill competition as HTC, LG, Sony, one plus, all die.

This is the exact opposite of having choice. Android/Google gives more companies more choice.

Because companies all make the same choice doesn't mean it's anti competitive.

This is so simple to understand.

If Google stop letting android be used by others, this kills competitors. Do you get that?

If google stopped letting android be used by others then the competitors would start creating their own operating system and we’d have a really vibrant and competitive market. Why do you think they wouldn’t?

Because they did and no one wanted it! You're wanting a real debate, yet post that if HTC made their own mobile os, we would have a really vibrant and competitive market. You fall down here. You can't know this. You made that up. This isn't a debate when you make that stuff up.

It's like you have no ability to look back only a few years and look at blackberry os, or look at ms os. No one wanted these. This wasn't android fault. People wanted Nokia to go with android. They didn't. The went Microsoft. They then lost sales as the choice was clear. People want android.

Do you know what tizen is? Do you know what bixby is?

Nobody wants 10 different operating systems. Not the customers, not the software developers, not the manufacturers. Well, nobody except mrochester.

I don't think he's arguing for ten different operating systems. Why don't you pick an example that makes more sense for the discussion, like three or four different operating systems? That way if you don't want to do business with Apple and the US decides that Google can no longer do business with any Chinese phone manufacturer, suddenly you aren't completely stuffed for choice in what phone you want to buy.

Because there are more than three or four manufacturers? It was his daft idea, not mine. Direct your questions at him

Lots of different operating systems from different manufacturers would be brilliant. Why should I care how much it costs them?

The example is for illustrative purposes to help you understand. It might be the Samsung makes an OS that it sells, HTC makes an OS it sells and Motorola makes an OS it sells. One or more other manufacturers may then choose to buy and use any one or multiple of those for their devices. We then have a competitive market.

i don’t think people want android. I think people get android because they have no choice and they’d be just as happy using Samsung OS or HTC OS.

And with proper regulation, google wouldn’t be able to prevent Samsung OS from being able to have a gmail or YouTube client so you’d be able to get all of the products and services you want/need (given that google are a horizontally integrated company they wouldn’t be able to deny access to their services just because it’s not android or iOS).

why don’t you want a choice?

It's quite simple. I can take my android apps and purchases where ever I go and, by large, use them on whatever android phone I like. I don't have to rebuy them, I just log and and they are available to download.

I do not want manufacturers to have their own walled gardens, I don't want to have to start from scratch every time I change phones and have to purchase the same apps on different platforms over and over. And, in fact, I quite like android. Shocker I know..

Oh we understand what you want quite perfectly.

I don’t think increased costs to you as a user is a good enough reason to cede monopoly power to one company.

I also think it could simply be mandated that buying an app gives you a license to that app regardless of what platform you have.

I'm fine with it.

:D but not iOS, right?

If you buy an app on iOS I believe you should be able to get access to the same app on android without having to pay again. Why should you pay again?

I’m not fine with it, hence this discussion. It’s interesting the number of people who profess to wanting competition... but then don’t. It’s amusing that your post stating you want more competition is on the same page as your post saying you don’t want competition. It at least exposes your agenda for all to see.

There’s no technical reason why developers for both iOS and Android apps couldn’t sell you a multi platform licence for a particular app.

In fact, “Buy Game X for £5 on Platform A and get the Platform B version for £2.50!” might generate some additional sales amongst customers with devices from both platforms.

Much like you can transport your contacts, calendars, emails and photos from one device to another I don’t see why there couldn’t be a purchase history you could transport from one device to another. That purchase history would then unlock the apps you have already paid for so you can re-download them on your new device without having to pay again.

Indeed. Viewranger for example is cross platform between iOS and Android. I've spent hundreds of £'s on Ordnance Survey maps through Google Play over the years on various android devices and can access them just fine on iOS via my iPad.

Indeed on steam I can buy a game and install it on multiple platforms.
