Naa, SUVs are also driven badly by mums on the school run. Go past any school on your commute and see them lined up outside, blocking entrances and pavements.

Outdoor types take something like a Defender.

Yeah if I have the misfortune of driving anywhere near the bigger schools here around time parents are it is a never ending mess of stuff like Range Rover Evoques and Velars, etc. and cars of that ilk.
 
Don't look at what they have done to the Puma either...

In newmarket it seems to be as many hyper cars as SUVs, but thats besides the point
I am sure if the local mums could affiord bentleys they would use them for the school run as well ;)
 
Yes, that would be the spreadsheet I mentioned. I know it’s more recent, I even mentioned that in a post above. The issue with that data is the number of accidents recorded and the analysis of it. It’ll have some useful data in it, but someone needs to spend the time splitting out all the data into classes and normalizing it against externalities. You can’t just grab a couple of cars and compare the results and claim, well much at all. It’s not how data analysis works.

I also understand what the summary was, I wrote it... It sums up the thread nicely though and pretty much reinforced everything I was arguing... so I reposted it here.

But yes, people should make their own minds up, just avoid the 20 year old data and look at newer analysed data, because SUVs are very different now to what they were 20 years ago (when the idea they were unsafe was actually correct). Or, as I said, do it the correct way and chose a class of car you want to drive, then work out which is safer within that class.

No longer work nor know anyone in insurance, but if there is a significant issue then there would be noticeable higher claim costs so they would adjust premiums to suit.
Having worked along side actuaries they would look for patterns such as this and load the grouping to cover
 
Why does the UK not really bother with MPV style cars anymore? They offer all the positives of a 4x4 and all the negative as well but offer a much better ride, fuel economy, speed, breaking, far more space etc. I am not talking your Picasso's but more things like the Toyota Alphard which is not available here.

They come in both hybrid and 300BHP V6 trim and have four wheel drive and more room than any mother would want.

I can remember when I was a kid the original Espace was a huge hit and they were everywhere but no one really wants them now but are happy with a SUV.
 
You need to ask? That thing looks absolutely tragic.

And unfortunately, that really is the answer.
Clearly, SUV drivers buy them for looks. We know that the equivalent MPV (where it exists) is going to be lighter, safer (overall), have less propensity to rollover and deliver better fuel economy.

The Austrian report best summarises it linking the driving of them to poor (and potentially dangerous) driving standards.
 
Personally I think most of them look horrific but the look of many of them seems to be fashionable or something :|

The Juke looks hideous, they aren't all that reliable or roomy inside either, yet they are everywhere.

People used to buy Italian cars for the looks. At least they were eye-pleasing to all.
 
It doesn't have to be a binary choice. Or the primary reason for buying. I don't think my car looks particularly good. But neither does it look as goppingly ugly as that thing. I certainly didn't buy it for its looks, but I would still rather not drive something I found almost offensively ugly, even as a workhorse.

I'm still not quite sure what the objection is. How can you find the concept of SUVs almost offensive, yet be fine with MPVs? They're hardly much bigger in terms of footprint as far as I can see. So why do you care if people choose one or the other?

Didn't think they were particularly unreliable but Nissans often need a lot of low key maintenance and they seem to cheap out for tiny savings but vastly inferior quality for non-critical stuff a lot as I've mentioned before stuff like door rubber dries out much quicker than other brands and so on.

Hate the Nissan SUVs though the styling just has something wrong with it like someone took a good design then warped it randomly to be "artsy" and the ride is horrific - a rowing boat in a storm would feel more stable.

They seemed to lose the bulletproof reliability in recent years. I can't help but feel it's due to the French involvement :P
