any other reason to wait for the pro? I’m considering getting one for my setup but not sure whether to wait or not?

Rack mounted, significantly faster throughput, 10GbE SFP+ uplink WAN port, built-in 3.5” hard drive so you can run UniFi Protect, 8 port switch, arguably better value than the UDM.

if you’re serious about UniFi, and you have a FAST internet connection, the UDM Pro is the better option.

I have been thinking of turning my Virgin Hub to Modem mode and replacing it for the last few months as it seems to consistency drop wifi connections.

The UniFi gear seems quite popular on these forums. I hadn't gotten around to it previously due to having to buy a USG/Switch/Key/AP, but the UDM seems a very convenient option. How does it compare to something such as the Asus routers or TP Link Archer routers in terms of functionality, wifi strength etc?

Thanks sounds like it’s worth the wait...currently on a 550mb/s VM connection. I’ll hold out!

Yes, you set the radio in initial setup when you choose the country code.

Interesting on the EU store the Amplifi had a specific option for UK.

Is this just so it’s bundled with the right power cable, or does the Amplifi not have the options for radio setup as it’s a more basic product?

@WJA96 is the UDM Pro fanless?

Jumping in until WJA96 answers:

It does have two fans, one larger horizontal laptop style fan and one smaller vertical fan.

I've not heard one in person, however like the newer Unifi switches its using a more directed air flow inside the case directly on key components and apparently its much quieter in operation than the USG-4P and earlier switches.

I don’t know. Amplifi is a zombie product. Personally, I’d steer well clear. UniFi is a core Ubiquiti product and I would very strongly suggest anyone stays within the UniFi family group for the simple reason that if you buy some UniFi kit and outgrow it you’ll always be able to sell it and buy the bigger UniFi kit.

That’s correct-ish. There are currently only EA units in the marketplace and the USW-Pro switches gained and lost fans through their development from EA to GA, so until GA units are released it’s impossible to say.

USW-Pro switches are now released to GA in the US and the feedback on fan noise is that they are nowhere near as loud as the old models.

EDIT: Sorry misread, I see you are referring to GA of the UDM-Pro :), let wait and see on those.

I think I might have confused people because I used the USW-Pro as an example of a device that started out with 2 fans, then had none or one and now I believe the GA ones have a single turbine style fan. Noise is also highly subjective as one persons quiet is highly annoying to another person who maybe wants to use the kit to watch movies in a home cinema.

It is good to see Ubiquiti thinking about cooling more and the new switch page https://switch.ui.com/gen2/ shows a good improvement for basic noise level even if the tone of noise may be a little worse or better for some.

The only reservation I have is how well these more directed cooling systems with fewer (and harder to replace) fans will fair for life expectancy and dust accumulation.

I'm waiting for a UDM-Pro for my home network, and although I have all the kit in a cabinet inside a cupboard I still often replace fans with Noctua ones so I am hoping this device won't need that expense for a change.

I assume we are still very much in the dark with regards to the UDM Pro release date? Looking at moving my USG and CK2+ on and buying on UDM-P on release, be nice to consolidate the boxes.

Had the dispatch note for my UDM this morning, looks like I should get a UPS too as it I understand it lacks the battery backup of the gen2 Cloud Key (and a "getting started" guide I found on Google seems to recommend it).

I figure I'll just get a cheap APC or something but if anyone has any particular recommendations they'd be appreciated. Will be in a lounge so I guess I'll be looking for one that doesn't buzz or hum too much. I saw one with regular sockets which might be handy.

The power-down thing is MUCH less of an issue now than it used to be as the Mongodb corruption issue was largely fixed in the change from 5.6 -> 5.7 and the UDM stores the database for the controller on internal flash rather than an SD card like the cloud key. So yes, a UPS is handy, but not the necessity it used to be.

Thanks again.

Also noticing from this initial setup video that it has a 12GB main flash plus a 120MB backup partition, wondering if that's another safety feature.

Yeah, it's been discussed in posts 3642 - 3649, 3652 & 3653 in this thread. It's sneaky, very sneaky.

I've blackholed the DNS queries for trace.svc.ui.com and also blocked my access points and switches from accessing the internet.
