Bought RTX 2060 super. Noticed I had to upgrade to WIN 10....Oh boy

Took delivery of my GPU from overclockers today.

So I didn't realise the card would be restricted on windows 7. Kept Geforce 970 card in and went through the update to Win 10. Doing OK then about half way through it stopped. Reserved partition failure. Downloaded partition wizard. Extended from C drive another 398 MB leaving just under 500 MB free.

Tried again. Got a Microsoft Office 2010 (can't remember exactly what program was) warning saying need to uninstall program. It wouldn't on the remove programs tab.Spent two hours finding a process to remove it. Managed to achieve that proud of myself (not completely computer literate). Go back to upgrading to windows 10.

Everything working fine. Installation successful. First boot up. Goes through the Win 10 logo then straight to wallpaper (lake, mountains and rucksack plus time/date) Expect my icons and taskbar to pop up. Nothing. No mouse cursor. The only icon is a globe in bottom right corner with what looks like a no entry circle in bottom right of the image. (I suspect this is key info). Ah just looked it up. It's no internet connection.

I think maybe it's the old GPU. Take it out. Try and boot on just the integrated graphics. Same result yet I'm seeing HDMI flash up briefly in top right corner.

All the while the time on the wallpaper is clicking forward so it's not strictly frozen just not booting through.

Put new GPU in. Realise I don't have an HDMI cable. My old system used to run on a DP cable into back of tower display and DVI-D in cable from GPU back into display. Same result. Ordered HDMI cable will arrive tomorrow. Took DP cable out of tower and put it into new graphics card. Same result again.

The only thing I can get into is the BIOS as I boot up.

Anyone any ideas??? Will this HDMI cable solve it. Is this connection issue stopping boot up?

Do I order a Windows 10 bootable USB flash drive?

Sounds like you're presented with the lock screen for windows 10. Perhaps a really daft question on my part, but have you verified your keyboard is connected (caps lock light, num lock light etc) before then typing on your keyboard once presented with the wallpaper? You could also try usb2 ports rather than USB3 as well as this *could* have an impact here.

Well the keyboard is working fine in BIOS. No light on when it hits wallpaper screen. Tried moving keyboard around USB into 3. No change. I'm seeing these alerts flash (Display port/HDMI) in top right corner of screen. I'm assuming they're monitor warnings. Completely random. I have display port now from monitor to back of new GPU. When HDMI arrives I'll put DP into pc tower and HDMI from monitor to the card.

It should arrive today but I'm doubtful it will make any difference.

If the screen is locked why is the clock/date working. I'm assuming the no connection icon is because I haven't set it up on new operating system yet and should have no impact on Windows actually firing up.

I think you're getting slightly confused with some of the terminology being used.

FYI, the HDMI cable and new GFX card won't make any difference with the issue you are having.

The issue is unlikely to be your keyboard, rather that W10 doesn't have drivers installed for your USB ports.
Do you know what motherboard you have ?

When you boot in to W10 you are presented with a lock screen (assuming you have a password setup) that requires you to either click the mouse or press a button on the keyboard, this will then reveal the password/PIN input screen, which enables you to log in to the computer.

No connection icon, are you connected via ethernet or wifi ?
If its wifi you will need to connect to your wifi, if it is ethernet and showing no connection, again this is likely to be a driver issue.

Thanks for your responses.

I had a password set up yes. I'm on wifi. How do I connect to wifi when I can only access BIOS and the mouse once I hit that wallpaper screen is nowhere to be seen.

Ditto the USB ports drivers. What you say does sound logical.

My motherboard is a Sabertooth Z77.

Try pressing Esc on the keyboard and see if the login screen comes up, does sound like the splash screen is what you can when you log in at the moment. Even if there are no lights, maybe try just pressing the Num Lock key to see if it comes on?

If you connect through wireless, it may be that your Wireless Adaptor does not support Windows 10, so you may need to pick up a new one, something like this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk...bps-wifi-dual-band-usb-adapter-nw-03b-ok.html

Z77 should work fine with W10, currently sat typing this on W10 on a Z77 based board.

Have you tried the keyboard in the black ports that are on the very left side of the motherboard ?
And if that fails try the red and blue ones ?
The black ones are USB 2.0 and are most likely to be supported by default.

Do you have the option to connect via ethernet somehow ? This may help if the drivers for ethernet are already installed then if you are lucky W10 will pull the drivers for your USB ports down over the internet and your keyboard will start working.

Alternative is probably a clean install, :(

Okay so I put keyboard and mouse in the far left USBs. Both have lit up but neither are working. I've tried to mash every possible key alternative. I'll try and get an ethernet connection.

I don't understand why I'm not getting the log in screen at least. Is that supposed to come up on top of the wallpaper. I've never used windows 10 before. You see the clock is working.

I have a TP-link ac1200 adapter which isn't lighting up at all so that clearly is missing the driver. That shouldn't affect the log in screen not coming up though surely unless the system would automatically download drivers if there was a connection???

Cheers guys. Okay no key works even though keyboard is now lit up. Keyboard works fine in UEFI Bios. Num lock lit up on log in screen but can't turn it off.It just immediately freezes out of BIOS.

Will that adapter immediately be compatible?

Lock screen is overlayed on top of the login screen. And lock screen is essentially just a wallpaper with some information like clock etc.
Pressing a key or clicking the mouse reveals three login screen so a little different from w7.

So you have a spare drive you can install windows on?
My suggestion is download W10 from Microsoft's site and put on a usb stick, then do a clean install. Also definitely worth connecting to the internet at these install stage to let Windows pull your driver's down from the internet.

Also you can use the usb stick to "repair my computer" try booting to safe mode and see if the peripherals work there

If I go into my sabertooth z77 asus uefi bios (version 1206)there is no add new boot option in the boot menu. Does that mean I can forget booting windows 10 repair out of a USB or will it recognise it when I plug USB in?

Can I download the latest bios version onto a USB and install in bios or only through windows?

On the board there is a USB bios flashback port. Will that do it.

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_Z77/HelpDesk_BIOS/

Can I update to version 2104 through the flashback port?

Got an ethernet connection and the no internet connection icon has gone now replaced by the connect symbol so it looks like the lack of internet wasn't the cause.

Losing the will to live now. So frustrating.

Hard to tell what's going on here.

Buy a new bigger SSD (250Gb minimum), use Microsoft media creation tool to make a Windows 10 setup usb stick.

Remove all other drives, connect the new SSD up, insert usb drive and install Windows 10.

This is a windows issue not a BIOS issue (at least it seems that way)

As we have suggested, try reinstalling W10 to another drive a completely clean install (with ethernet connected) if the new install is ok, then it pretty much narrows this down to a driver issue.

as bledd and i have both suggested, use a working PC to create a W10 setup usb stick with the media creation tool.

as far as boot options in the bios go, usually the BIOS will detect any new bootable devices that have been plugged in and they will show in the BIOS.

Yeah that looks the only solution. I only have a chromebook so I'll order a win10 USB off Amazon and see if that works.
