i5 9600k + RTX 2080 Ti bottleneck?

Just upgraded by GPU, to an RTX 2080 Ti, mostly play at 1440 but want as close to 144fps as I can get, haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I was wondering whether the i5 9600k would be a bottleneck to the GPU and I should upgrade? PcBuilds calculator reckons I'll be 18% bottlenecked, but not sure if this is true or not.

I haven't overclocked the CPU yet, but I might try and push for 5Ghz, if it's worth it?

You should overclock anyway.

Depends on the game, with 6 cores 6 threads you're right at that point where with a 2080TI you may get stuttering in a couple higher threaded games, this will only get worse over time but overclocking it will eliminate some of that.

IMO a 6 core 6 Thread CPU is not a good match for a 2080TI, its not bad either, at least not at the moment but there is little to no longevity in it.

Thinking of upgrading to a 9900k I assume that would fit a 2080 Ti a bit more suitably?

Unfortunately it would be a bad investment and leave you nowhere to go from there - if you wanted another upgrade. If it was me, I'd be going 3700x
 
I cannot see how a 6 core CPU running at approx 4.5 ghz would impede a 2080ti even at 1080p.
You'll be fine.
However there are 8 cores to be had at approx 300 quid so the te temptation is there to upgrade rather than out of necessity.
I had a 7800x 6 core CPU running with a 1080ti all running butterly smooth at 1440p with cpu usage at 60 percent across all cores at best whilst playing the latest AAA titles

Need intel, as I as I often run simulation software that requires Intel virtual extensions, (which is a pain) but it has to be Intel.

That's unfortunate as the 10 series is a different socket :(
I guess that's your only path in that case, the 9700 isn't worth it either as it doesn't have HT.

For longevity that would defiantly be worth it, or a 9700K but again that's just an 8 core 8 Thread.

From the start yes absolutely, he can even upgrade to a Ryzen 4000 later on... but now that he is already on an Intel Platform he would have to change the motherboard, i think a 9900K will see him right for a few years.
 
play games, use MSI afterburner to monitor GPU usage, if you under 90% then yes CPU bottleneck or setting are too low

To be clear Right now 6 cores is the sweet spot, most games dont like hyperthreads and perform the same on 6c/6t as on 6c/12t
overclocking the CPU is never a bad thing, but with a turbo of upto 4.6Ghz you should be good

BUT.. the real answer to the question should be are you having performance problems? i think the answer would be no?

EDIT what speed ram do you have?
 
There are few games where a 6 core/thread CPU will hold back a 2080 Ti, and very few which would see a significant bottleneck. I'd say stick with it until you start noticing performance issues, at which point monitor CPU usage to see if it's an issue.

out of genuine interest what games would that be, i only have a 6 core and i am hoping for a new GPU in the new year but i cant do GPU and CPU

there is a thread on here about the 3500x vs the 3600x and in all but one game the 3500 wins
the game it loses in is by a few FPS

Depends on a number of things. Game and whether the system is balanced. Going back to the op, that is not balanced imo.

your right its not, the GPU out weights the CPU. but its not detrimental.
What res dose he play at? what FPS dose he need?

before saying you must buy and 9900k or 3700x you/we should ask what his needs are, nobody did he was just told buy a new CPU
