Bit more info required before you can receive decent advice.

Is the RAM a single 8GB stick or 2x4GB? How many memory slots does that motherboard have?

What PSU does it have?

What monitor is he using? 1080p 60Hz or something a bit nicer?

What sort of games is he playing? e.g. His fave 3 games just now?

hi, it has 2 x 4gb and only has 2 slots,
not sure on the psu will have to check,
he has a msi mag 2416 144hz curved monitor,
gta,fortnite,formula 1 2019

thanks

As long as the PSU is capable, he'll need a new CPU with more threads and a better GPU. Both Fortnite and GTA (GTA online) are borderline for four threads, more so when adding voice comms into the bargain. CPU runs at 100% and causes stutters (or will with a better graphics card demanding even more from the CPU, especially at 1080p and needing good amount of frames to get the best out of the 144Hz monitor).

Because it's two things, I would suggest ordering a six core/six thread Ryzen 3500X from Asia. They're coming in under £100, you'd have to google that. Not sold individually elsewhere except as part of prebuilt systems. And then something like a GTX 1660 Super with the remaining £200. It's a far better card than the GTX 1050.

If the Asian 3500X does not appeal, I'd suggest finding an extra £70 and getting a six core/twelve thread Ryzen 3600. It'd be more than what you/he bargained on spending right now, but it will also perform better for longer than the 3500X.

Next upgrade after that should be 16GB (2x8GB), imo.

Might as well find out which motherboard it is exactly, along with the PSU.

A new CPU either a ryzen 5 3600 or a 2600x.

A Gpu, either the 1660 super like Danny suggested or maybe look at the used/2nd hand market for gtx 1080/1070ti for £200.

16gb of memory in 2x8gb sticks of 3200+.

Selling on the old parts you replace would likely keep the net spend at around £300.

i know his motherboard is not a great one {asus prime a320m-k}l
and the psu is a corsair vs350 model 75-001834 if that helps
any advice is helpful as i am very new to this.
thanks again

when you say selling old parts where would be the best place for that ?

This will the Members Market which requires 6 months and 1000 post to access.

I have edited your opening thread as we do not allow mention of competitors.

Maybe best not to try an eight core CPU in that motherboard. Besides, a Ryzen 3600 would be faster.

GPU will have to be one with a single PCIe power header due to PSU.

That's really the limit as far as upgrades with that board and PSU.

ok so would it be best to upgrade the motherboard and psu first?

I wouldn't go that route as there'd be no performance gain. Instead I'd get CPU (3500X or 3600) and GPU (1660 Super) which the existing board and PSU can handle. That should keep him happy for a good while.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £209.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

Single PCIe connector, 120W TDP.
