Do I need a new motherboard?

Hello all.

I’ve just got a shiny new GPU – an RTX 2070 Super and would like to upgrade both the memory and CPU in my PC.

Currently I have an i5 6600k and 16GB Kingston Savage Black DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz in a GA-Z170X-Gaming 3-EU motherboard. https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170X-Gaming-3-EU-rev-10#ov

My question is would it be wise to get a new motherboard for the new CPU & Memory (I want 64GB) or would my current GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 be ok?

Many Thanks

Kate.

Do you actually need 64gb of ram?
Most things don't require that
Pretty sure that board will take 64gb any way

And depends what cpu you want
If a 7700k is enough then don't need a new board

Technically no, I don't need 64GB of ram but when I last did parts overhaul I had the same response for 16GB - 8GB was more than enough. I don't update often, maybe every 5 years so I want a bit of future proofing.

Is a 7700K a big upgrade on my 6600K? capable of lasting a good few years? If so then great, Thank you.

Kate.

I think by the time you really need 64gb, DDR5 will be available to take up that slot so 64GB now would be pointless, that's if you're solely using your pc for gaming and nothing else.

I'll have a think.

With DDR5 not coming out for a good few years yet I might go ahead and get a new motherboard and CPU now and goto 32GB DDR4.

Thank you.

7700k would be a reasonable improvement i went from 6600k to 7700k myself not too long ago
Though given current cpu situation
Going amd is a very viable option I just got my first amd cpu in 15 years
From 7700k to 3900x and totally happy
Depends if you want the higher clock speed of the 7700k or more cores from amd cpu
Personally I would look at amd board and amd cpu/6 core or more and drop ram to 32gb to save cash I can't see needing more than 32gb for most uses even in next 5 years unless you do heavy rendering etc
Actually got a 7700k and board for sale lol though can't seem to find a selling section in these forums

I had no idea there was a limit on the amount of posts and i cant see it mentioned in the forums rules page either.
happy new year :D

Perhaps it's because I am on my phone or something ~oh well won't worry about it

And sorry Kateb I didn't intend to take over your post
I would delete my last few posts but only seem to have option to edit not delete weirdly
Sorry about that but happy new year to you

Get 64gb RAM.

You clearly wanted it, and have made the cost worth it in your head, sure, you probably won't notice anything over 32gb but you'll have piece of mind that if your pc slows/bottlenecks at least your RAM is maxed.

Unless you are a professional photo/video editor or if you are setting some sort of server then there is zero reason to get 64gb of ram. You will never use it and I mean that. 32gb is overkill right now for the standard consumer.

If you are going to spend money on a new cpu and motherboard then get something that is newer and not out dated. A 3600/3600x could be had on the cheap. If you are buying the 7700k new then it is not worth it in my opinion, if you are getting it cheap then it might be.

16GB RAM is enough, 32GB is safe, unless very specific scenarios, but not gaming.
I would go 7700 just to extend the life of your system, or either wait for the new Intel socket or go AMD.

Trying to future proof that platform for five years is trying to get that dead horse moving forward.
https://www.chrisdunnconsulting.co.uk/flogging-a-dead-horse/

Intel stagnation era four core CPUs are low end for basically any heavier workloads which might need more memory.
And any change to another quad core should have overall cost at pocket money level to make any kind sense.
Over year old Shadow of the Tomb Raider can make 8 core 9700K CPU peak at 100% load.
And next-gen consoles to be released sometime in fall will come basically with 8 core/16 thread Ryzen 3700X.
So amount of games capable to fully loading high core count CPUs will only rise.

And because of Intel's bottomless greed and anticonsumerism you can't even use such modern core count CPU of same architecture on that motherboard.
Unless wanting to hack/mod BIOS...

Intel's clock hasn't said tick or tock in five years, while they artificially change sockets to force people into buying new motherboard.

This year's "10th gen" is nothing more than another rebranding of that 6th gen Skylake architecture with constantly rising number of vulnerabilities.
Security of Intel's "quality" CPUs is at this level:

https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/20...secrets-by-starving-your-computer-of-voltage/
SGX was supposed to prevent even the highest privilege code, like OS kernel from accessing that protected memory...
And that Intel's dead horse will still be limited to 10 cores.
While AMD has had 12 core CPUs available half year and top model being 16 core...
With actually improved architecture CPUs coming in next summer and compatible with current mobos after BIOS update. (and likely quite cheaply available in fall/end of 2021)

And even with new platform we're likely going to be in DDR6 era by the time more than 32GB is needed by gamers/normal home users.
