Budgies

I had a Budgie once. It was a feathered Satan, would draw blood just by looking at you, and kept escaping though the cage bars.

It used to torment my pet rats, who one day managed to grab it through their cage and eat it's head. I didn't buy a replacement.

iv always wondered this, if you had more than 1 rat and the other rat saw its mate's head being bit off, would it have an effect on the rat which is still alive? or do animals don;t get effected by this sort of stuff?

Sprey is the seeds as they come of the plant they grow on i think. You get like a clip and clip the spray to the cage. they can hang of it or sit and peck at it. Its kinda more natural than them feeding out of a plastic foot bowl lol. You can buy them fruity treats and so on. But mine didnt enjoy them at all. so he stuck with Trill and he was fine. This is spray http://www.arcatapet.com/fullsize/779.jpg

Thanks Crossy, now I know what Sprey is. Seen it before, I always thought it was wheat :o

dare i admit it but i used to breed budgies and show them (when i was like 13), had like 500 at one point!! they are easy to look after, they do need toys but one i will say is that you should get wooden toys for them rather than all the plastic rubbish that is dipped in paints etc and try to have a natural cage theme.

must haves for a budgie cage are iodine/mineral block and cuttle fish for thier beaks and the obvious food bowl and water feeder. millet spray as someone suggested is great for budgies, as is eucalyptus (sp?) leaves :)

same as this guy only managed to get about 200 though :) Trill is the best food (or was) , if you get a pair they will breed easily (males have a blue strip above their beaks), but as said will most likely hate people, learn to hold them right as well as then they will never bite you (because they can't) if you get a single male then you can teach them to talk (teenage boys have the best luck but keep trying it may work)

Our cockatiel is very quiet while the cover is on the cage. She does get noisy sometimes, but not at night.

True our one as soon as we put the cover over her cage, shes quiet as a mouse...soon as you take it off...all hell breaks loose:p...i swear even my neighbours can hear the blasted bird...she seems to get really noisy if she wants one of our attention ie me or my mom...or when shes hungry....crazy bird tho....right little character she is.

I really prefer cockatiels over budgies, much much more character.

But yes they can be quite loud. My old cockatiel used to mimic the phone, also if anyone went to sneeze he'd do the 'chooo!' after the person had drawn breath in. He would also cough whenever I did. :D

She loves sitting on my monitor because it is nice and warm.

Hey all,

I have a few questions. I'll just copy and paste what I wrote on another site.

I bought a budgie yesterday and had done my research before getting one. It's a baby budgie, male I think, the cere is purple/blue with white around the nostrils.

When I took it out of the box to put into the cage, the little bugger flew out and all around the room. Our patio windows are fairly big and it being a bird flew right into them, flew around again and then sat on the curtain rail.

At this stage I got him and he bit me and very hard, holding the pain I managed to put him in the cage. He was breathing quite hard and was upset I gather.

The cage is fairly big for one bird has 2 perches/a mirror and a Bell. The budgie doesn't seem to interested hasn't really called out and hasn't eaten anything. Just sat on the top perch, I've been talking to it and put my hand in the cage and it wasn't to shaken up this time, and it let me stroke it's belly abit.

I'm just a tad worried, do budgies act like what I've mentioned when they've been parted with the rest of the group (was housed with 3 others), and will take time for it to eat and get used to the new surroundings?

Pictures will be up later. This is my first budgie I'm keeping, last year I had 2 Rosella Parakeets, which were really active as soon as they'd jumped into the cage.

Today, he's being really quiet and when I play sound clips of Budgies from youtube he'll call back. I do feel really terrible, as he just doesn't seem happy, I know it's early days just thought he'd be a lot more enthusiastic. :(

Thanks guys.

clip the wings

Right this is controlversial I know, but if you want to make friends with your budgie, you should consider clipping it's wings. Look up guides on how to do this. If in doubt that you can do it yourself, find someone local that can. Make it clear though how short you want it cut.

All you want to do is take a little off the ends of the feathers. I used to do this to mine, they could still fly, but only for short distances. Mostly at same or lower level, making it easier to catch them for return to cage.

Mine were very friendly, sit on shoulder, nip ear/hair etc. They even got on with my cats. I have a pic somewhere of one budgie sitting on my eldest cats head while he slept. He loved the bird but I never left them alone together for fear of natural instinct getting the better of the cat.

Sadly the budgie died while in the care of someone else, the vet was unable to diagnose the cause of death. Last week my cat had to be euthanised too as he had contracted FIP and had lost the battle.

The first day i got my old budgie he bit down hard on my finger, and from that day he was an evil little ****, i couldn't even go near the cage without him attacking the bars near me, Trying to change his food/water was a nightmare, when he died i did not get a new budgie

The best budgie we ever had was from one of my sister's friends (her budgies had done the deed and they ended up with a number of budgets), because they were used to humans from the start he was incredibly tame :)

He used to play fetch with small bells, if you flicked it he would chase after it and bring it back :)
He would also sit on technic lego bikes and things like that (think father ted, but with a budgie rather than hamster).

Our current budgie is like a small feathered, scared satan and hates human contact :(
LOL, Sounds great fun & funny ,bless him, I have 2 budgies 1 male & one female, a year old & very temperamental towards each other, they come out & fly about & fly back, but still don't trust me , didn't think it would take from April last year up to now! I talk to them & they have a healthy diet not just seeds! Any ideas of what I can do for them?

I hate it when I read a whole thread before realising it's a necro.

I've smuggled budgies once or twice before.
