To consider a law that would make it a criminal offence, not dissimilar to Corporate Manslaughter, for the British Media to knowingly and relentlessly bully a person, whether they be in the public eye or not, up to the point that they take their own life.

So, is it OK for the gutter press in a free society knowingly and relentlessly to bully a person if they don't take their own life?

The gutter press is not the only guilty party here, the public gets what the public will pay for.

It's not bullying to report on and follow the charging and trial of someone accused of domestic violence. Doubly so when that person relies on the media for their career.

There appears to be an awful lot of special pleading and double standards around this case.

It's not exactly a coincidence that certain tabloids were rushing to delete their smear articles about her immediately after the news of her death.

I'm sure nobody goes into that line of work expecting (or desiring) a completely quiet and private life, but equally that doesn't mean they have to accept everything that comes their way as a result. I can't imagine what it would be like knowing every aspect of your life - good and bad - is public knowledge. More so when the intrusive and relentless tactics of the tabloids are employed against you.
 
Here we go, watch all the z list celebs come out the woodwork about how bad the press is and then next week watch them all kiss the ass of the same press while they try to manipulate it to make them do what ever they want.

Yes the press is sometimes out of control and many papers are nothing better than emergency bog roll however its the same press that they all adore and use to further-themselves.

There is a difference between reporting and smearing, no? Reporting is in the public interest, but the press had seemingly made their mind up here in the rush to destroy her career having built her up in the first place, which is their modus operandi.

We’ll never know what would have happened in court, but it was largely immaterial at this point, at least as far as her career was concerned.

No one deserves to be tried by media.

To be honest there should be some regulation on reporting about such things AFTER a person has had a trial and been found guilty, not before or during a trial, trial by media is a cancer that needs eradicating, we're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, the media just paints everyone as guilty with zero repercussion on the damage this does

There are plenty of much better examples to use of inappropriate media behaviour than this one.

That makes very little sense, how do they define relentlessly bully?

I’m sure plenty of politicians would love it if all their negative press coverage stopped.

What about people like Harvey Weinstein? Do they have to stop writing about him because he might get stressed out about it?

Reporting on people as a result of their criminal actions is absolutely fair game tbh...

I agree, but given the response when such things are suggested in Context of gender based violence or domestic abuse where the accused isn't a famous woman, such as this:

The same thing has happened with Caroline Flack though, there have been articles regarding her alleged misdemeanours.

Also, Douglas wasn't driven to kill himself by the actions of the press and social media. No matter how justified or otherwise you think those actions were, that deserves a debate. The manner of her death makes this deserving of consideration and sympathy.

As when any celebrity dies their is always a massive overreaction how people carried on when Diana died was laughable crying and wailing about someone dieing you don't even know personally and she was no saint either get a grip people.
