NVMe Gen3 vs Gen4 vs SATA

Just because it comes up every so often.

My reason for choosing SATA is that it runs cooler and doesn't use your PCIe lanes.

Watched it last night and it was not even the fastest of SATA SSD's @ 450MB/s but not sure on the more important 4k size speeds or I/O's

It depends on the software you use. I use software development and CAD programs and these make heavy use of storage for read/write and both small and large files (for example one CAD program can write a 250MB undo file per edit, frequently reads from 15GB+ of SqlLite symbol libraries etc).

The switch from good SATA SSDs (850 Pros) to NVMe SSDs (970 Pros) was a night and day difference, although with other software I saw much less difference.

I think eventually we will see the disappearance of the traditional sata connector and everything will use m.2, whether that be NVME or SATA

I just really hope that seperate data and power cables for SSDs goes away. Really don't need this many cables for a <5w device.

These power cables are not restricted to just SSDs though. As an example, I've got a power cable supplying extra power to a USB card with 4 dedicated controllers.

Yeah, I don't know why an SSD would need a 15-pin power connector in the first place.
